PostPosted: Sat Oct 22, 2005 1:24 pm    Post subject: Caller ID Broken? When REN exceeds 1.0 Reply with quote Back to top

I have installed my Vonage Linksys RTP300 after my Westell DSL modem/router. DSL is 6mb/600kb. Everything works fine except for the following problem with Caller ID.
When the REN total of the phones connected exceeds 1.0, none of the phones show any caller ID info. Voice quality is fine. If the REN is less than 1.0, the appropriate caller ID info is shown.
The phones work fine when the REN is above 1.0, the ring and voice volume is fine and does not seem to be affected.
Is the RTP300 most likely defective?. Should I see if Vonage will replace the unit (I signed up directly with Vonage and they shipped the unit to me)?
Any ideas on what is the problem?

Vonage has been experiencing issues with caller ID and the RTP300 since the last firmware update. It's supposed to be fixed in the next update, which was supposed to be released yesterday. Stand by.

There's another thread discussing this issue- "Anyone else having problems with Caller ID?" Check it out.

I had looked at that thread in detail. I did not see any mention of problems relating to the REN.
Since my Caller ID works fine when REN is below 1.0, I assumed it was associated with the RTP300 hardware, not the firmware. Now that you have mentioned the upcomming update, I will cross my fingers and hope that it helps.
Most people will never see a REN above 1 since most ot the new phones, expecially the 5.8gHz ones have a REN of 0.0B. In my case, we have several 900mHz phones that my wife loves and they are not 0 REN.
Another possibility I have considered is the Loop current and/or Ring voltage. However, I do not know enough to figure out which might be the cause, if indeed either is causing the problem. In the short term,it will not hurt to wait and see if the update fixes my problem.
Thanks.

Yes, but one of the things that was discussed is the fact that the problem seems to be related to the ring cadence setup in the RTP. While I don't pretend to understand it all, it's clear that the ring cadence affects the length and sound of the ring, so it's tied up with voltage, waveform, and such.

Something that I had not mentioned until now, is that I have observed differences in whether caller ID registered that depended on the number of phones I had connected, and on whether or not their ringers were activated. I didn't mention it because I haven't been able to get consistent results. Right now, CID works about 1/3 of the time with my phones. It seems clear that something is right on the edge of working, and small variations make the difference. Hopefully, the new firmware will get the needed operational margin.
