I don't know if I have my networking terminology correct, but I will try to explain my situation:

I have a 3Com Cable Modem connected to a Netgear WGR614 v4 wireless router. My RTP300 is connected to the Netgear router.

I am able to access the RTP300 admin menus, thanks to reading this forum (thank you!) and setting up remote access, using the local IP address and port number (192.168.0.7:8080).

My Vonage service works great.

What I am trying to do is use the four ethernet ports on the back of the RTP300, because the ports on the back of my Netgear router are all used up.

What do I have to change in the admin menus in order to be able to plug additional devices (printer, another pc, etc.) into the RTP300 ethernet ports so that the RTP300 will act as a simple "switch" (and so the Netgear router will assign the IP addresses, etc.).

Do I set Local DHCP Server to "Disable"?
Do I set DNS Proxy to "Disable"?

I think I am on the right track, but not sure how to proceed.

you're on the right track. why not just try it out anyway? it's not going to kill anything and you wouldn't have to wait for a response.

I certainly could. I figured this might be a quick one for anyone who knew a bit more than I did about networking.

I also didn't want to do anything that could mess up my Vonage service. I just switched from SunRocket, which was an absolute disaster (worked for a week, and then never worked again despite three new "gizmos").

Vonage is working pretty well and I didn't know if this could hurt the phone service.

The way you have this setup is the same way I started out, but I quickly figured out that this wasn't the "optimum" setup because of the QoS issue.

Your netgear router probably doesn't do QoS for voice... my DLink 624 didn't either.

For this reason, I would recommend you change the way your network is setup:

modem -> rtp300 -> PC's and Netgear router to LAN port.

Enable DHCP and DNS proxy on the RTP300.
Disable NAT/Firewall/DHCP/etc. from Netgear.

This way, the netgear is both a switch and a wireless access point.
Enable WPA-PSK on the netgear too...

In short, you want the RTP300 to serving up your internet access and the netgear to be the switch.

With that combination, I have had nothing but great phone service, my VPN works fine, XBOX Live works great, and my wireless connection is rock solid as well.

Good luck!

Wow, thanks for the advice!

I think I may keep my system as is for now, as the Vonage line is a second line for a nanny, and QoS isn't crucial. I'm more concerned with the quality of my internet connection for VPN, etc.

I may try it both ways though.

Thanks again!
