Somewhere (I can't remember where) I read that you are supposed to dial *99 before sending a fax over Vonage. I've never done this and my faxes go out fine. I also have a ReplayTV that dials out fine (now that I have slowed its modem to 19,200 baud) without *99.

What does *99 actually do? I can't seem to find any info on it.

I have a data port on my phone that I plug my fax into and send faxes straight from my Fax machine dial pad. I have not used *99 and everything works fine.

Set up a free efax account and send somthing to yourself and try it out.

good luck

Thanks k5. I don't have any trouble faxing. I am just wondering what the *99 actually does.

Basically it tells your ATA to set up to do faxing. I believe it was for the cysco routers. The ATA actually should switch to "fax mode" automatically.

*99 Changes to the fax mode for the next call. Download the manual for the Cisco ATA and it explains the protocols used. All greek to me. My fax works fine without *99.

Doesn't *99 just turn off call waiting for the duration of the next call? The last thing you want during a data call is a call waiting beep...

I remember having to use this in the old days of dialup...

It's more than that. *70 turns of call waiting.

Vonage told me *99 disables ALL features, not just call waiting

I read that *99 is supposed to turn off "bandwidth saver" for one call. That way, you can get more bandwidth to your line for the fax. If you already have bandwidth saver turned off, then *99 does nothing.

I can't remember where I read this, so I might be wrong. However, it seems logical.

*99 temporarily disables Bandwidth Saver as well as temporarily changes the packetization from the default of 20 to 10 as well as codec G.711
