If I sign up for the 500 minutes 14.95 basic calling package, are local phone calls included in that price? Or are local calls and long distance included in that 500 minutes per month ? So what I am trying to say are local phone calls free and long distance go toward the 500 minutes per month ?

Both local and long distance calls are treated the same. They both count towards your 500 minutes. Incoming, toll free, and Vonage to Vonage calls do not count towards your 500 minutes.

I think this is a good topic in which to point out some advantages of the Basic 500 plan. Many people seem to think that this just means you have 500 minutes a month, sort of like a cell phone. But it is actually quite different and I think a lot of people could save money by switching from the unlimited plan to the Basic 500 plan.

First, the REAL limit you should think of is not 500 minutes, but 756 minutes. Why is that? Because the difference between the Basic 500 plan and the Unlimited plan is $10. For those $10 you can buy an additional 256 minutes under the basic plan at $0.039 per minute. In other words, as long as you use less than 756 minutes a month, the Basic 500 plan is cheaper.

In addition, several types of calls don't count towards your minutes. Here are the ones that I can think of:

Incoming calls: Unlike a cell phone, where all calls count towards your minutes, with the Basic 500 plan only outgoing calls count. So if someone calls you, you can talk all you want without burning any minutes.

800 numbers: As Mathfaster pointed out, toll free numbers do not count towards your minutes. There are issues with local 800 numbers (you may not be able to call a local vendor using an 800 number since the call looks like it came from New Jersey), but most 800 calls will work just fine.

Voicemail calls: Checking your voicemail doesn't count.

Vonage to Vonage calls: Calling another Vonage customer doesn't count.

International calls: Calls outside of the US and Canada are billed separately for both the Basic 500 and Unlimited plans. You pay the rate for that country regardless of which plan you use. So those minutes don't count towards your total usage.

I find the Basic 500 plan a great deal. My current month will end on Monday, and I have used only about 230 minutes so far. I've never gone over. Of course, your mileage may vary. If you originate a large number of calls in the US and Canada then the Unlimited plan may be for you. But I think too many people have a knee-jerk reaction when they see "500 minutes" and don't even bother to go back and check their historical usage before making a decision.

Sorry about this, Vonage. Very Happy I'm sure Vonage would rather have everyone on the Unlimited plan and make more money, but I'd rather not pay more than I have to.

Excellent post! Applause

I too have switched from the unlimited plan to the "basic" and I am now saving ANOTHER $10 per month on top of my HUGE savings over POTS. Dancing
