First post, sorry if this has been asked already
First of, my info: Firmware Version: 1.30.01, Sep 2 2005 Voice Version: 3.1.6(LI) Customization: Customized (i have no idea what this means) ISP: Comcast, MD
This has been bugging me for quite some time. My router constantly disconects. I have to reboot it at least 3 times a weeks to get my connection working again. Sometimes, i will loose the connection for just a minute or so, and then get it back.
Is this a router issue or and ISP issue?
Thanks! |

I'm having the same issue. My RT31P2 (firmware 1.30) seems to loose it connection every 8 to 12 hours. I have confirmed this by putting my old Symantec VPN100 Firewall back in place, thus removing the RT31P2 and my ability to use my Voip service. I've only had this problem for the last week. Prior to a week ago I had no issues. My oly guess is that I *JUST* recieved the firmware update to 1.30.
At first thought it was a DNS issue because I was not able to resolve DNS. Rebooting the RT31P2 router seemed to resolve the issue. Now it seems to haappen every 8 to 12 hours. I contacted support but in the mean time I'm thinking of setting up a DMZ on the Symantec VPN100 for the Linksys....maybe that will work.

I had this problem until I threw IPCop firewall on an old machine and moved the Linksys behind that. I have not had to do a single reboot since.
I think the adapter is puking when it is hit with port scans, DOS attacks and all the other crap that may come your way. |

Hmmm...interesting. Do, or did, you have the logging feature turned on? I'm wondering if it is a memory issue. As I stated in my last post I've setup a DMZ (exposed host) on my old Symantec VPN100 for the Linksysrouter, this seems to have helped.

I guess I should add that I'm using a comcast cable modem. I know that I've seen more than my share of wasted bandwidth and traffic in my logs coming form the comcast network. |

No I did not have logging turned in the adapter but I do have Snort running on the IPCop box. I see quite a bit of DOS type attacks and even SQL overflow attacks.
I'm on Wideopenwest. |

1.30.01 is a piece of crap that should have never happened.
I wish there was a way to roll back to 1.30.00, that was stable! |

Similar problems here. The RT31P2 will restart frequently dealing with the massive amounts of traffic on a Shaw Cablesystems Internet connection in Winnipeg. Ironically, a DSL connection with the local phone company seems to work better (go figure).
I too had to put my RT behind a firewall, in my case an old Snapgear LITE (firmware 1.7.11). Doing a 1-1 NAT to the RT is difficult on this firmware, but it still seems to work without me having to forward any ports or do the 1-1 NAT.
Even the LITE is having trouble choking on the traffic - I freqently get "packet dropped" in the router's syslog, but it doesn't die. I used to have a SG300 router in front of there, which could handle the traffic and support a 1-1 NAT to the RT31P2. To be honest, though, I can't recommend spending $300 on a router to protect the oh-so-fragile RT31P2 which is supposed to be a firewall in and of itself.
To make matters worse, linksys.com is unreachable currently. Last I checked, they didn't even have any firmware updates for the RT. |
