What in your opinion is the best cable modem to ensure high quality converstations using Vonage's Linksys RTP300?

If you have bad experiences with a type of modem, post it! Or, if you recommend a modem not listed, feel free to add it. I'm anxious to hear everyone's opinions.

And feel free to post your comments!

Thanks

I use the Surfboard 5100 and like it alot. I know the 5120 can be a quirky modem to start with.

None of the above. I prefer the Scientific Atlanta DPX2100. DOCSIS 2.0 ready and fast too!

I am not certain how anyone could answer this poll with any amount of authority.

First off very few people have used more than a couple of modems so they really can't offer insight into which one is the best.

Secondly different modems are going to work better with different cable systems. There may even be differences in performance based on the actual loading on your segment of the network.

In the past we used to be able to talk about manufacturers and quality of product lines. WIth the large number of acquisitions resulting in different families of products being sold with the same brand name even that is hit or miss at this point.

I use a SB5100 and I am happy, is it the best? How the heck would I know?

Well, obviously we aren't all test technicians and we don't have 5 different modems that we test on a regular basis.

I'm just trying to get a rough idea of what experiences people have with their modems. I'm guessing for the most part, scerruti, that a lot of people are like you and are happy with the modem they have.

That may be a better topic subject for the thread.

Because I take hundreds of your calls and that's how I can have just a little bit of authority on this....

I happen to have a motorola SBV 5120, which is a 5120 with voice capability (disabled, Optimum asked if I wanted the triple play haha NOT)

This modem works great. I also had an RCA DCM 425 which is a nice, compact modem, worked great with Comcast, did seem to get a little warm though...

Pretty much any DOCSIS 2.0 modem is good to use.

Modems to stay away from :

Anything made by terayon, speedstream or ambit, and if you get a modem from your cable company without a make and model clearly marked upon it, throw it back in their face.

Modem/router combos can be a NIGHTMARE especially if they are wireless, or you don't know what your PPPoE password is or even if you were issued one. You may have to open ports or put the Vonage device in the DMZ of the modem router's firewall. Particularlary comes to mind the motorola sbg900 (works great after you disable the firewall) and Thompson Speedtouch models.

Good point.

There seems to be a big difference betweent he SB5100 & SB5120. I wish I could edit the poll as I forgot a couple of poll options SB5100 & other.

But that's OK. I've heard the SB5100 is a little more reliable than the 5120, but to each his own.

On Adelphia, even though the 5120 is docsis 2.0 modem there have been numerous issues with it, and it is not even recommended for their "Extreme" tier as it is rolled out, even though the 5100 is.
