Currently have a Vonage account with a telephone number I quite like, running the RT31P2 router, but now I have a WRT54GP2 which is also Vonage (brand new not registered), how do I switch over to this new router and keep my current number ?

Very simple. Just call into customer service, they will switch out the MAC address, voila.
