Per the posted rules...

1. Location: Warminster, PA
2. Provider: Comcast cable
3. Speeds: 6MB down, 384Kb up
4. Modem: Motorola Surfboard SB4200
5a. Vonage adapter: Linksys RTP300
5b. Router: Linksys WRT54G
6. Comcast > Modem > WRT54G > RTP300 > House wall-jack > Rest of house
7. Issue: Others tell me that my voice sounds choppy. Audio sounds fine on my end.
8. Detailed results ... Click thumbnail to view.

So I've already tried power-cycling the RTP300, and I just upgraded the WRT54G with the latest firmware from Linksys. However, others tell me that my voice breaks up and becomes choppy within about ten seconds into the conversation.

Any suggestions would be most appreciated.

that would be a consistent finding with your testyourvoip results. your isp is the place to look. use pingplotter.com for a bit to see where loss is occuring.

I'll do so this evening, and report back. Specifically, what do you see in my TYV results that confirms my audio problems?

Thanks.

look at packet loss/discard stats from you to boston (from you to the other persons phone, as in what they hear when you speak) as opposed to from boston to you (what you hear when they speak).

cable isps have latency and packet loss issues normally. If you can swap to dsl then you will likely lose those issues. even though the rated speed sold may be lower with dsl, the lack of latency and packet loss will make up the difference. For me that also increased my voice quality. Cable I used with Vonage was RR at 5 Mb.
I currenltly use SBC DSL 1.5 Mb
For surfing and downloads the apparent speed is still very close.

Done, though I'm not sure how to parse the results. I assumed (wrongly perhaps) that I should use Pingplotter's own site to run the test. If this is the case, please let me know what site would yield more useful test results. Also I re-ran the TMV test tonight, and the "Discards" was up to 0.24.

Unfortunately, switching to DSL isn't a viable option for us, so if I can obtain enough information to work with Comcast, I'd prefer to go that route.

this is something that should be run for 24 hours or so. also, if you can find a site that hits alter.net, that would be ideal, but not necessary.
and fwiw, I highly disagree with childers. in a specific area with specific isp's and hard data collected over weeks if not months, that could be true. but as a generalization, no way.

No problem running it for a day or so... But if you could recommend a "site that hits alter.net," that would be great.

Update... When I entered "alter.net" into my browser, I was forwarded to mci.com. So I tried entering mci.com into pingplotter, and found that the route went through alter.net. Here are my results after running pingplotter overnight for about eight hours. I plan on letting it continue to run while I'm at work today.

looks good so far. as long as it continues to look like that, I'd be interested in seeing another testyourvoip result.
