Hello all, first post here. I did a quick search on this and didn't find anything that jumped out as relevant. (Though not sure I searched in the most efficient way)

Anyway, I live in North Dakota where it's legal to record phone calls without consent of either party and after a decade of living here I'm ready to try it out. Apparently the person that had our number before us really must have p***ed of Citi Bank. For 2 years now we've been asking them to quit calling bit it seems they think I'm this woman's husband or something. Rolling Eyes

So after numerous attempts to get them to quit I want to just get a recording of them ID'ing themselves, me stating I''ve never heard of this person and demand the calls stop. That way when they call back (as they always do) I'll have some sort of evidence to take to a lawyer or the FTC or whoever it is that handles this (Yes, I'm that mad about it)

So how about it? Is there a way (short of lots of coinage) to record incoming calls to an audio file? Preferably free. I'd hate to even buy a new toy for this as it will always be seen as giving them money in a roundabout way.

Does Citibank leave a message? There is an easy way to get them right there.

We've tried that. It seems that we need a recording of me actually telling them not to call. Otherwise it's one of those he-said she-said things where I can never be able to irrefutably say I told them to stop. I have a digital answering machine but the damn thing beeps when recording.

I have serious doubts they're going to honor the request based on stating that I did in fact tell them to stop.

I forgot to mention, the calls are almost always those damn recordings, so the answering machine will do very little to help as it will hang up before the person gets on the line.

I don't know of any way of doing that easily. If it were a soft phone, you'd be one step closer, but ordering soft phone from Vonage would give you a different number on the computer.

A simple microphone pickup of the type that you stick to the phone would work to get the conversation into the computer sound card, but you don't want to spend anything. If I were you, I'd call their legal department and tell them that you contemplate legal action.

Ummm, this is an easy one. Just go by an answering machine and a lot of them (at least the old microcassette ones) allow you to hit a button and record the current conversation. Don't know about these new digital ones nowadays.

Yes, I record audio on my laptop by connecting the phone line to my modem and using the standard Windows utilities.

Sound Recorder is limited to 60 seconds, so you may need some other tool to record the audio. There are plenty of free recorders available on the Internet. Other than that all you need to do is open your Volume Control, select Options -> Properties and select "Adjust Volume for Recording". Make sure you have your phone line, and only your phone line selected.

You can test your setup with any phone call, for example try calling your voicemail. This setup requires that your computer has a modem and it is voice capable, most are.

While it is possible to capture the audio directly off the network it is more complicated. It has been discussed on the forums. It requires placing your computer in a position to capture the network packets between Vonage and your adapter and this requires either a hub or two network interfaces on your computer. Once the packets are captured they can be decoded into an audio file. This has its advantages if you want to record every call and the sound quality should be slightly better.
