ok..i am strongly considering getting vonage but i really don't know much about it at all. I have roadrunner connected to one computer, obviously I do not have a router. My modem is a SB4200 surfboard. How would I set vonage up? I see that there is a router for this that vonage will give me when i sign up. With this router I can set up my computer as the DMZ so i can host games, etc.? If it matters I have a panasonic phone with two handsets. Also how much bandwidth does vonage take up, and does this occur all the time or only when on the phone? I think this is all i have for now, thanks for your time |

1. Roadrunner should work great with Vonage. In fact in an independent voip test, the #1 rated voip solution was RoadRunner as an ISP and Vonage as voip provider.
2. If you order Vonage service via the web or telephone they should send you a router which I beleive will be the RTP300. It has QoS and you can set your computer up for DMZ.
3. Any telephone should work with Vonage Service.
4. You wont even notice the bandwidth usage over roadrunner with QoS enabled. It only uses bandwidth when you are on the telephone.
I have RoadRunner in Tampa and Vonage and it works great.

Anyone considering going to Voip should evaluate the type of phones they have. An expandable phone system in my opinion is required if you do not plan on changing the wiring and have more than one phone to connect and plan to port your existing phone number to Vonage. Do your existing phones have caller ID/name? Not necessary but one of the 'free' features of voip. Do you have alarms or TIVO/Direct TV boxes that need to call out? Are you aware a power outage will cause loss of service unless you have battery backup/UPS for your router/modem? Do you understand the difference between POTS 911 and voip 911? Do you understand how the reliablity of your voip service is tied to the reliability of your internet provider? Forewarned is forearmed. All these issues are discussed in other threads on this site. |

I have Roadrunner standard. My family is hooked on Final Fantasy XI which we play online through a Ethernet adapter on our PS2. My daughter loves to IM on AIM all day long. I use a VPN to connect to work as I am the only controls engineer and am on call. I will be working on a control system from home. Finally my youngest son has a girl that won't leave him alone and calls all the time. We have had all this going at the same time with no problems.
But, based on what I have read on this forum it seems that a lot has to do with the local cable service regardless of who is running it (Comcast vs. Roadrunner vs. etc.). I think I have been lucky. But, I would bet you have no problems. Especially if you are only talking about one PC and the phone adapter. |

Suggest you go to Vonage Website/Help/Equipment. Select RTP300 and you should get all the answers to your question. |
