Guys,
I'm not quite sure how the vonaeg network is setup but do you know if we all are served by the same group of server withing an ip range ?
In other words, do the Vonage Voip servers always begin with 141.xxx.xxx.xxx ? I need to make some firewall rules but I don't know how to account for the Vonage network yet becuase I'm njot sure what range of addresses they use for Voip communications. I'm sure others haev 'been thre done that' so please pass this info on. Thanks. |

I found out yesterday that when connecting to or from Vonage there are multiple UDP ports used from an array of different IP addresses that can change. I too thought about locking down my port forwarding rules so the udp traffic is only allowed from one IP or a range of IPs, but this isn't possible. So what I did (and this may not work in your case) was to setup a DMZ and connect the MTA in it. This done and port forwarding setup correctly for the necessary udp ranges, my LAN then is not susceptible to a possible compromised MTA (if this in fact could ever happen, but I doubt it from reading about the Motorola MTA). Better safe than sorry.
Here's a link on port forwarding for the udp ranges needed if you don't already know. http://www.vonage.com/installation_port_forwarding.php |

Vonage for the moment appears to use port 5061 to communicate signaling needs and port 10500 to send your voice packets over.
The IP address is communicates on these ports can and does change. Port 5061 speaks with the Vonage softswitch which sets up/tears down calls.
Port 10500 for the actual voice packets communicate directly with the terminating gateway which does change quite frequently.
As well, when accessing your voicemail, if you use the *123 code to access, this points you directly to the Vonage voicemail system.
The port ranges that Vonage asks be opened on a personal firewall correspond to Voip specifications.
Note: Above is for a single line user, if you have multiple lines (fax or voice) an additional port is required for the voice packets. |

Don't forget about DNS(53) and TFTP(69) ports. Those are also utilized. |

How do you know what IP address has been assigned to your Vonage Box? Is it changing with each phone call? I would like to remotely control the duration of any given call made using the box. |

Vonage does not assign your box a public IP address. You either utilize DHCP or assign it a static IP address (Private address). If this box is before your router or NAT device, Vonage still associates your box to your ISP given IP address. |
