It seems like since I connected Vonage to my router, my overall internet speed dropped. Does it slow your connection down???

I bought the Vonage/Linksys WRTP54G to replace my Linksys BEFW11S4 when I changed to Vonage just so I would not have multiple routers. Now I have found that the download speed of the WRTP54G is about 1/4th of the BEFW11S4.

For now, I have switched back to the BEFW11S4 as my primary router and put the WRTP54G behind it just for phone.

Does anyone know how to improve the speed ot the WRTP54G so I don't need two routers?

Thanks

Craig

Nope, the WRTP54G is a pathetic router, pure & simple. It's fine for casual web browsing, but that's about. Like many (if not all?) combination devices out there, you're sacrificing performance & quality for convenience. This applies to modems/routers, audio equipment, and video equipment.

Thanks Vonage TPA

That's really too bad..... Vonage should stop offering the WRTP54G if performance can't be improved.

As I recall it was a $99.00 option. I could have had their phone modem only for free and would be in the same boat.

Believe me, I went through the same angst. Fortunately, in my case, the router was free after the rebate finally came through.

Once you get a few firmware updates, I think you'll start to realize that combining routing and other services is just a bad idea, especially when someone ELSE controls the firmware on your router.

The WRTP54G is a good "consumer grade" router for basic, low volume use. As long as you don't have a super high speed connection, or want to do too terribly much with your connection while on the phone, you'll probably be very happy with it as a router.

I'm taking it on the road with me to Florida this month when I visit my father, because I'll be working during the day and I'll need to have my phone line with me. It'll probably do just fine to manage my Vonage line, my laptop, and his computer, as long as I watch the sending of large emails over the VPN while on conference calls.

However, if you have a very fast connection that you want to make the most of, or a really slow connection (like me) that you really NEED to make the most of, the WRTP54G falls pretty flat.
