this is my current setup

cable modem > wireless router > vonage router

if I change it to
cable modem > vonage router > wireless router

will I have any slowdown in speed for my network? I understand it would give priority to the phone, but without using the phone will it slow the network. hopefully this is coherent

no. but if you give model numbers you may be able to use it as you have it and give the phone priority.

I don't think that router has QoS (quality of service) capability, so you likely will need to have the rtp300 first. on the other hand, unless you're experiencing choppy audio, there may not be any difference in switching them. you could test it out by doing some typical internet use while on the phone.

I don't know if you will see slow down with your RTP300. I saw it with my RT31P2. I have 8M service from Comcast and with the RT31P2 first in line i could never get better than 6.5M down from multiple test sites. You will have to just try it and see. The one drawback with consumer grade routers that I have seen is they have limited throughput that can degrade as services are turned on.
