We have 2 Vonage lines, feeding 4 two-line phones. After we added the 3rd phone, the line-in-use lights on extensions not in use no longer light up during a call.

I know Vonage can boost the ring voltage, but is there a setting on the TA, or a 3rd party in-line booster, that we can use to raise the voltage enough so that our phone lights will work again?

Vonage can raise the voltage in the TA from what I have read or you could google for a Loop Current Booster

That's really pretty odd. It's not really very much like the ring voltage issue. The voltage on the line is DC high when all the phones are hung up, and goes _low_ when any phone goes off hook. That's what is supposed to turn the lights on. Does the problem occur regardless of which phone goes off hook? Have you tried removing one of the first two phones to see if the third phone works OK with the remaining "first phone"? It's conceivable that there's an issue specific to the phone that you've just added.

That's where it gets a little puzzling. I found what actually triggered the issue, but don't know "why" it is happening.

We had three 4-line phones (all AT&T brand, similar to each other, but different models). Before adding the 4th telephone unit, our phone lines were:

Line 1 - Verizon POTS
Line 2 - Vonage
Line 3 - Vonage
Line 4 - Verizon POTS

When we added the 4th phone, we also bought another Vonage line to replace a POTS, so it became:

Line 1 - Verizon POTS
Line 2 - Vonage
Line 3 - Vonage
Line 4 - Vonage

The phone jack/inputs are 2-line; i.e., line 1-2 on one cable, line 3-4 on the other, for a total of 2 cables to 2 wall jacks per phone.

When the 4th phone was added, at the same time POTS was replaced with a third Vonage line. That's when the in-use status lights stopped working.

I assumed the 4th phone must have become too much for the Vonage adapters to power the line-in-use lights for all phones. I was wrong.

Turns out that without the POTS line on port 4, the in-use status lights do not work.

If I plug a POTS line into both line 1 and line 4 (our original configuration before adding the 3rd Vonage line) the lights work perfectly again.

So, there is something-- voltage, or whatever-- on the POTS line that these phones seem to require within each two-line group (L1-L2, and L3-L4) in order for the in-use status lights to work properly. In other words, either L1 or L2 in the first group must be POTS, and either L3 or L4 in the second group must be POTS. Otherwise the in-use status lights do not work.

Anybody got a clue? I checked on-hook and off-hook voltages for all POTS and Vonage lines, and they are virtually identical, so I am totally confused what the problem might be.

All four lights stop working when you add/subtract the second POTS line? Unplugging the first POTS line has the same effect?

How about polarity? Is it the same on all four pairs for the POTS-V-V-V configuration as it is for the P-V-V-P configuration?

You say you checked on-hook and off-hook voltages. Approximately what were they? Relative to what?

When POTS is plugged into L1 and Vonage is plugged into L2/L3/L4, only the L1 indicators work. If I plug another POTS line back into L3 or L4, all lights work properly. Just to reiterate, L1/L2 are on the same cable, as are L3/L4. In order for all lights to work properly, a POTS has to connect to [L1 or L2] and [L3 or L4]. No matter what, the L1 indicator always works.

Yep... checked polarity, rigorously inspected every cable drop and jack, conductor by conductor. All the wiring is correct.

My cheap voltmeter showed around 50v on-hook, just under 10v off-hook. The numbers were basically identical for POTS and Vonage.

The good news is, it appeared to be specific to the AT&T phones. We took all 4 back to Office Depot, exchanged them for four new 4-Line RCA phones, and everything works perfectly now.
