Steve, that is some really good news for you indeed! Great to hear your CID is FINALLY working correctly!!! Very Happy Looks like .58 is turning out to be good overall so far....

So far, I'm liking .58 - my caller ID (which was fixed in .55 after a little twiddlage from CS) remains working. Sound seems as clear as what I came to expect in .50, .52, and.55.

One annoyance, and CS is aware of this but not ready to see it as a release-wide bug yet (and it may not be!) is a new bug introduced in .58. If I answer phone calls before Caller ID pops up, it answers with a loud screeching BEEP and the call quality is TERRIBLE, and I'm being generous. The CS rep I talked to during my testing commented that it sounded like I was in a car with the window open. I agreed, except he sounded like he was outside the car as I was driving by. Loud, hideous HISSSSSS that you could barely talk over.

If I wait until the second ring when caller ID pops, the call connects clean, and the voice is as crisp and clear as ever. Slight, almost imperceptible hiss in the background. I'd call it the equivalent of an excellent cell phone call, not quite landline quality but darned close. The CS rep said my voice shifted to the metallic here and there on the outbound, but I set my QoS a little more aggressive last night and I'll test that as I can today.

I rarely get voicemail, so I can't test stutter tone, etc. This line is mostly for work to call me and vice versa, so 90% of the time I'm right here to answer the phone.

But, all told, I think .58 fixes more than it broke. I don't know if Linksys has fixed any of the router shortcomings of the router, but I tend to doubt it.

Well said! While I am really liking Vonage and have successfully been able to keep the wife on board, I feel like we're a bunch of beta testers, providing good feedback but not knowing if it's heard... I know I personally would provide more specific regular real time feedback on this forum or elsewhere if I knew for certian the right Vonage folks were listening and would even comment back. Hello Vonage, can you hear me now? Smile

There ARE Vonage reps who visit the forum on their own personal time. They are very helpful, when it's possible for them to do so. Obviously, they aren't going to be able to do anything about missing rebates or systemwide technical issues, but they do frequently post hints here and there, and PM with people with new problems to diagnose them and see what the issue is.

So, by all means, if you have a unique problem or solid test results, and the time to do so, post it. They Are Watching. They may not be able to fix it, but more information = better.

As to this being beta - well, duh. Wink Seriously, Vonage is trying to fit an entire phone switch into these little modified consumer routers. What used to take an entire building has had a little teeny piece chopped off and is sitting in your house, powered by 12v. It's a big accomplishment, and it will not be done without pain. You, my friend, are on the cutting edge. And sometimes you get cut. That's the way new technologies work.

POTS has been around for a long time. All the rules are pretty much worked out. All the billions of dollars have been spent on switcher equipment, dedicated wires, etc. Voip is very new, and especially "drop in and go" Voip that does not require very heavy nerdage. I still think that Voip is too early for the advertising that Vonage does claiming that no network knowledge is required, but it's getting there, through companies like Vonage and their customers learning the lessons, trying out new things, and slowly maturing the technology, sadly through trial and error sometimes, but that's the only way to do it.

Avoiding mistakes comes from wisdom.
Wisdom comes from experience.
Experience comes from making mistakes.

Wow, you should come to my church and give a sermon. Wink Thanks for the story about how monkey became man but that's not what I meant. I don't disagree with what you're saying, all I am saying is it would be "nice" to know for certain that feedback provided here or anywhere else is getting back to the right people that can affect change... I think on this and other forums it "`feedback sometimes does get back to the right folks" which of course is better than never....

LOL!

OK, too wordy. That's me. Guilty as charged (grin).

I agree, it would be nice to have someone "officially here," as it would save a lot of people calls to CS, etc. It's a good dream. Wink
