Yes, that's how it's supposed to work. Vonage only sends the number and not the name. It seems to me that if they can send they number and they already have our names on our accounts associated with our numbers, that they could also send our names. I don't know, call me weird if you want, but seems simple enough to me. What do you think Vonage?

I dunno what Vonage thinks, but personally - I'd rather just have the number sent. If anyone has caller ID on the receiving end, and care that it's me calling, and is someone I want to give my name out to, they are going to know my number anyway. Wink

Heh! Last time we heard "final stages of testing" it took 3 weeks for the final rollout to happen. I wouldn't hold your breath. I've placed e-mails, called a few times -- they've made the "secret changes" with 11 herbs and spices and my Caller ID still is hit and miss -- no logical reason. Give me 1.00.50 back when my Caller ID and everything else for that matter worked flawlessly. "If it aint broken, don't fix it!"

I'm guessing the next f/w release will be far from correcting ALL the Caller ID issues. It appears a very large beast has been freed from its dungeon and will take some time to tame.

The names are not actually "sent", they are placed in a large database that is replicated to all carriers. Your name is looked up at the recieving end and added to the CID information. Placing names into this database apparently comes with a charge that Vonage has chosen not to pay. Note that this puts them in the same boat as most wireless providers. The most you usually see from them on CID is something like "Wireless Caller".

Like many others, I've been battling CID problems with .55 on my WRTP54G connected to house wiring. Combined REN of all devices is 0.6. Problem is when my modem is connected to house wiring, none of my two phone systems or the modem receive CID. With the modem removed, the two phone systems receive CID. In researching this problem, I read a few threads regaridng reversed polarity of other linksys/vonage units and decided to check mine. Sure enough, polarity showed reversed. I cut a 6' phone cord in half, rewired it to reverse polarity, and connected it between my router and the house wiring. CID now works 100% and is received the two phone systems and my modem. My modem is ~10 years old -- old enough to care about polarity, apparently.

[Update:] 5 hours later CID doesn't work anymore. I'd rebooted the router shortly before attaching the reversed polarity cable, so I'm just one of the many whose CID works for a while after a router reboot.

I am reasonably sure that what goes wrong is too much noise on the line when the receiver is on hook, and that noise I believe causes the phones not to be able to pick out the caller ID signal. I have actually measured what goes on as the phone rings and posted a bit of a report on it here. (And from there you can go hear the sounds I measured.)

What is new is this:I have now found that when I plug my laptop into the phone system, and also into the power line (with or without the laptop turned on) I can get the Caller ID to fail. As soon as I unplug it from the phone system, caller ID works again. I bet it's because the laptop is injecting 60Hz noise into the phone line. I will be measuring it again later this week and posting a further report on it.

No ,matter what happens, Vonage really needs to address this issue. I can't believe that it's taken them this long to come out with a new firmware version. They used to crank out new firmware versions every 2-3 weeks with this router when it first came out, but they've been few & far between ever since then.

Call quality still matters more to me than CallerID, so I'm very happy with my RTP300. You can keep that nasty, noisy RT31P2. I went through 2 of those before they sent me the 300, with the second RT31 they shipped being far worse than the original RT31. The RTP300's niiiice & quiet and has a good frequency response.

Me too, Kevin! Ain't life great? Very Happy

And TPA, I understand apparently some of the RT's had unacceptable noise, but mine's as clear as any of the 3 RTP's I've listened to at friend's houses. Its certainly not a "nasty, noisy RT31P2", and its nice to have working CID, working voicemail indicators, etc etc! My personal opinion is, about the time the NEXT generation of adapters/routers is released, the RTP's will become stable enough to be reliable. Smile Never, never never use new technology in the first few months, unless you enjoy frustration!
