Post subject: Caller ID Not Working
As of now, my caller id is working. I think one of pre-1.55 firmware updates is what took my caller id out and 1.55 didn't fix it.
Fixing the problem by putting an old caller id box between the rtp300 and inside wiring is scary and indicates to me that
Vonage
has not completely thought through their firmware updates. I'm curious as to what validation testing they go through before releasing this stuff on their customer base.

Now, Caller ID is working
with
the house wiring connected, and I did not change anything since my report yesterday. Router still reports 1.00.55
CS told me yesterday that they were sending my issue to the advanced team with detailed info about my house wiring and other phones, so perhaps they reconfigure RTP300s and save time by not contacting the customer when the changes are done.
So far, I've had three calls in a row today with Caller ID. Got my fingers crossed that this fix holds.

I just can't take this anymore. I may sound like a despicable jerk but I depend on CID to avoid the calls of people I don't want to talk to. That's why I paid SBC $8.50 a month for CID and CIDw/CW for years and years. That's why I was one of the fist people I know to own a phone that worked with call waiting w/caller ID.
The fact that's we've been waiting for weeks is absolutely ridiculous. The fact they couldn't fix it for weeks is absolutely ridiculous. The fact that they know how to fix it but won't do it immediately for everyone that might be affected by it is simply insulting.
By the way, has anyone else noticed that while this thread is (one of?) the longest running active threads on this entire forum it's never been mentioned in the newsletter?

LOL - I hope someday it will be, as I tend to mention threads that have solutions to a problem, such as
Trowski's hotel solution here
.
He will get "Member Of The Week" for that one.

Threads like this do get the attention of the International press.
I bet
Vonage
UK gets their "pound" voicemail problem fixed because of
this news article

Judging from my experience, a "one size fits all" approach does not seem to work given all the possible load variations on the phone adapter phone jack.
What we may be seeing is that there is no magic combination of settings that will make all features work for everyone's hardware mix.
When CS told me that they do not see another firmware release any time soon, it is making me think that 1.00.55 is designed to handle "most" phone line hardware mixes, and
Vonage
is counting on customers calling CS to have custom configurations set for "other" phone line hardware mixes.
While this post is loooooong on theory and short on fact, I still urge you to call CS back again. They may have instituted new procedures since the last time you called them. Let them know that you want them to forward your list of devices (and house wiring description if applicable) to the advanced team and get your Caller ID working.
My caller ID has continued to work all day today for the first time since 1.00.5x started causing problems with it weeks ago.

Woohoo!
As much as I would love to take the credit, I am just reporting it worked...But I will take the MOTW for what it is worth!

kpdillon, thanks for the tip on what to block to prevent updates
I wonder if there is a way to block firmware updates without having to move the RTP300 after my WRT54G?
I have the RTP300 first so QOS for the phone is easily handled. I upload large files to servers and Murphy's law dictates that "the phone shall always ring during large file uploads".
CSNET, good thinking. I had the same thoughts when I started out with
Vonage
and my RTP300. But it turned out that major uploads of files to my brother n' laws server for backup purposes was causing calls to be mangled so badly that it forced me to purchase a WRT54GS with modified sveavsoft (freeman) firmware for QoS management. The RTP300's builtin QoS just didn't do the job for me. With the WRT54GS in front of the RTP300 I can upload files and not worry about my wife bonking me on the head when she uses the phone.
