I am a new Vonage subscriber and just received a RTP300 router. The user manual directs me to use it as a phone adapter, placing it behind my existing wireless router.

Why is this? Are there known problems with the routing capabilities of the RTP300? I read some posts that had VPN problems with routing IPSec through it. Is this a universal problem?

What about the voice QoS capabilities of RTP300? The manual never claims that it has any (the QoS section dealt with applications/games, not voice). Does the RTP300 provide voice QoS? If so, shouldn't the manual have recommended placing it just after the cable modem and convert my wireless router to an access point as some of you have done. Have you encountered any problems with that configuration in terms of reliability, especially with VPN?

Thanks for any pointers. I realize that these issues have been touched upon in earlier posts, which are very helpful, but I wanted to discuss them directly.

Hi,

I've installed it in both ways. Although my RTP unit came w/ a quick install guide that recommended me replacing my existing router with the RTP.

I first tried just adding it to my existing network off of my trusty Dlink router. I had every app that I need working flawlessly through the Dlink, so I didn't want to spend the time setting up a new router. Well, I got the dial tone, and provisioning this way, but when my wife was on the phone and I was sending email w/ large attachments, the call would become choppy. Dlink router has no QoS.

So, then I gave up on that and installed the RTP as the main router, connected directly to the cable modem. All of the voice issues went away, which leads me to believe that the RTP does indeed have QoS for voice packets. I had initial issues with my VPN (Securremote - IPSEC), but then I made a change to force UDP encapsulation and the VPN started working.

I've had it setup this way now for a month without any issues. I've had no loss of service, or problems w/ any apps. I also play XBOX live and it works very well with it.

Hope this helps! BTW, I also have a wireless router that I now use as an access point.

Thanks for the feedback. This really helps. BTW: what is UDP encapsulation and how do you do it on the RTP300?

UDP Encapsulation is a feature of the VPN client I use, nothing to do w/ the router. All you need to do is make sure that the IPSEC VPN is enabled (this is the default).

"Force UDP Encapsulation" is a feature of SecureRemote VPN client software. Your VPN client may not need this feature... good luck.
