Just face it - fax over IP is not reliable enough. I have tried and tried, but to no avail. Just get a cheap POTS line for fax. I have been with Vonage for about 6 months, but recently the quality of service has dropped dramatically : 6 out of 8 faxes fail, I have no dial tone at least once a week and have to reboot...VoIP just is not viable yet. Let the techies test it for a year and go thru the pain, return in a year once it's working.

I agree with Disgruntled. We dropped all our phone lines and converted to Vonage using Comcast cable modem. Both voice lines are fine but since day 1 we've had problems receiving faxes. One page faxes seem to come through most of the time OK, however, anything fax more than one page ALWAYS generates a communication error and drops the fax. We've run tests on our internet line and Vonage even says the lines are good quality.

The baud rate on my fax is set at 9600 and this just DOES NOT work very well. If you rely on your fax machine I would highly suggest to AVOID Vonage fax service.

I think I have tried everything. DSL filter. Lowering to 9600 Baud. Turnning off error correction mode. Vonage fax is just plain unreliable. Going to try faxaway Efax service. If that doesn't work, I'm going back to POTS for fax.

I too have the faxing woes. We bought a Dell A960. It seemed to work fine. Within the last few months it got worse and worse trying to send and receive faxes. We 'assumed' it was the Dell and had it replaced. Same problem. Unit is at 9600 with ECM off to no avail. Put in tech request. May have to switch back to ma bell if they cant give us what we need.

It has over tendays and I've spent another 3 hours on hold w/ Vonage and another hour or so working with tech support to no avail. I bought a new fax I didn't need, I have hundreds of customers who can't fax me orders, and now I'll need to change back to a traditional phone line or internet service and contact all my customers again to give them my new fax line.

Vonage's Customer Service: I called three times today and every time a recorded message says to call back later. They really do [ADMIN EDIT - dconnor]. Now, I've been on hold for 37 minutes waiting for a "live" person to answer. This isn't service... I realize it's the Executives of Vonage that don't care about their customers and hopefully, sooner rather than later, a competitor will catch up to them

You might want to look here: http://www.vonage-forum.com/ftopic1779.html and read how Las_Vegas seemed to solve the issue for him/herself.

That's your answer??? C'mon man, I guarantee that my problem and everyone elses problem is not due to using the wrong kind of phone cord. For the record, I have an hp 6010 with a dedicated Vonage fax line and I have never, ever succesfully sent a fax. Both lines have perfect sound. I think I will be cancelling my fax number...

for me what allowed me to fax was simply adding the *99 prefix to the number I was faxing to. I tried working with my Fax vendor to no avail, then noticed a tech note about using Bandwith saver (which I was) and the need to prefix the dial string with *99 (which I wasn't) and ever since... no fax problems at all.

I trust those complaining have tried the *99 prefix but to no avail?

Most HP Officejets should be able to have their baud rates changed. However, you need to talk with HP customer service rep because there is a chance that you can fry your machine and void the warranty. Call the HP service number at 1-800-474-6836. They were helpful when I called and helped me to change the baud rate to 9600.

Jason

I just suffered through the same problems everyone is talking about with my Officejet K80, and I've finally solved the issue. My Officejet baud rate was set to V.34 33600 by default. The Vonage FAX line is perfectly clear, so my FAX makes a "good" connection (at 33600) to other FAX machines, but the slight latency of the connection was probably causing timeouts during the communication. I used a procedure described by Praveen Arram at

http://forums1.itrc.hp.com/service/forums/questionanswer.do?threadId=734178.

Please note, I accept no responsibility for anybody who messes up their FAX machine with this procedure. I only modified the send speed, as I was able to receive a FAX with no problem.
