Well after some hassle I finely got things up and running with vonage.
I have a d-link DSL604+ adsl modem/four port switch, with a ip of 192.168.2.1, running DHCP (only giving out ip's up to 192.168.2.30). Changed the ip of the linksys RT31P2-VU to 192.168.2.31.
Plugged Ethernet cable from router to port 1 on linksys. I then used a very short cable from the linksys "internet or WAN port " to port 3 on the linksys. Yes that does only leave you with one spare port, but you could always use that port for a switch or wireless AP. Plugged it all in, all working very well.
If I don't use a cable from the wan port to port 3 on the linksys only the phone works, no traffic will come through the ports.
Thanks for the help I received from the forum,
Hope this helps someone

One thing i should add to the above post.
As well as change the ip off the linksys i also turned of DHCP and NAT.
The phone adaptor/router is the linksys RT31P2.
I've also had time to try a few other things out. I also have a zoom X3 Ethernet modem with one Ethernet port.
This goes to port 1 on the linksys. As in previous post i use a small cable that goes from the linksys Internet or Wan port to port 3 on the Linksys. I then plug a d-link 900ap+ into the last spare port on the linksys, which works really well, connecting four macs wirelessly (and an old PC laptop).
If your using a modem or combined modem/router/switch that authenticates your ADSL connection i think this is the way to go.
It's a good job I didn't listen to the Vonage support desk. They first told me that I had the wrong power adaptor!! I hung up and called again. This time I was told that the router I had (d-link 604+) wouldn't work with the RT31P2 as the authentication was PPPOA and not PPPOE. WHAT RUBBISH
I knew this was not true and that's when I came to the forum to get help. I didn't get the answers I was looking for but at least was pointed in the right direction through some links.
I hope this can help any other newbie's to VOIP.

Are your pcs being routed from the Dsl modem/router or are they being routed from the Linksys rt31p2? Louis |

With the other option i have checked out (a zoom X3, linksys, d-link 900AP+ AP) i use the wireless AP thats connected to the linksys. |

The only possible downfall that I can see with your setup ( someone please correct me if I'm incorrect) is that your Vonage traffic (up to 90 kbps up and down) on an active phone conversation is not going to get the proper prioritization that it needs if you happen to be downloading a huge mega file on one or more pc's. In other words, your PC download/upload needs may conflict with the needs of the Vonage Adapter. The internet traffic is being routed out to your PC's with the same priortization as your Vonage adapter(with the exception of the Mac pc which routes off the Linksys) This may or may not affect you depending on the bandwidth of your Internet connection
If you are stuck with your DSL Modem/Router, I would connect the Vonage Adapter to the DHCP Lan side of the DSL Router/Modem and then connect a wireless router on the LAN side of the rt31p2, and the Vonage traffic is automatically given priority by the Linksys rt31p2..Just a thought...Louis |

Yes your right, i don't get the benefit of qos, but i am on a pretty good 2Mb connection (over 2000k), i will keep this in mind though.
I'm not stuck with the router/modem either. I will change things at some point, or i may revert back to the Zoom 3 modem i have, connect it to the linksys, then plug my d-link 900AP+ or maybe a switch into it.
I am trying to keep the hardware down to a minimum though . i 'll just have to see how much use the voip phone gets.
thanks for the input
