I guess this email serves as both my introduction to the forum and also offers a glimpse of what brought me here.

The fact that Vonage has the ability to send your voicemails to any email account is what finally sold me on their service.

Unfortunately, my Outlook is a bit too cluttered and bogged down by the huge size of my .pst file as it is to make opening a bunch of .wav files all day long very practical.

So, I started looking around to see if there were any other solutions (other than streaming from the Vonage website). I found some posts here about people looking for an app to check voicemail, and also some posts on a Windows Media Center Edition forum. I did find one little app that seemed to do something similar, but it wasn't quite what I was looking for.

I decided to create my own utility (being that programming is my day job and all). After realizing that I really liked what I've created so far, I've decided to release it as freeware for others to use when it is done.

On this page you can see a screenshot and a description of what I'm working on, with a sign up form to be notified when it is ready for download:

http://www.bussetech.com/vm2pc/

Right now it works with my Vonage account, and I'll be working throughout the week to make it configurable for others to use.

Let me know what you think...

It is nice to see that someone is coming up with a free alternative to VM Rover.

Does your tool work via email or through the web interface?

Stephen, It uses the email option via POP3 with planned support for TLS/SSL so it should work with Gmail. I may add IMAP if there is a demand.

It ignores emails in your mailbox that aren't from @vm.vonage.com so you don't need a second email address. I'm going to switch that to a user-configurable setting incase Vonage changes their addressing or regionalizes it (maybe they already do?).

I haven't looked into how other Voip services are sending their POP3 email, but it wouldn't be hard to add them.

Count me in! I'm definitely interested in something like this. While I already have my e-mail set up to automatically forward & file Vonage voice mails, many of my Vonage friends don't have the luxury of a giant e-mail account. I can see myself using this on the road as well.

I personally like the old *123 myself since I am home most of the time. When I finally do find some employment this would be great for retreiving voice mail from the office. Looks pretty good so far. Good job.

Nothing new. I've had to shelve it for a bit to concentrate on a number of big projects for clients. Bad timing.

It has not been forgotten though. I'm taking a much needed two weeks off at the end of this month, and have time set aside then to work on it.

Thanks for your interest & patience,
Chris

xvMail downloads your Vonage voicemail from their secure website and stores them in a dated folder structure.

I was having some issues not getting my voicemails via their email setup, so I wrote this quick application. I hope to improve it and add features in the future.

PostPosted: Tue Apr 25, 2006 11:03 am    Post subject: Perl script for manipulating your Vonage voicemails Reply with quote Back to top

I have created a perl script for manipulating your Vonage voicemails. I use it in Windows using Cygwin.

Get it at:
http://home.comcast.net/~g.karnik/von_msg.pl

von_msg.pl [options]

Tool for checking and downloading your Vonage voicemail messages.

options:
-help Shows this message
-verbose Sets verbose mode
-username [username] Vonage account name
-password [password] Vonage account password
-proxy [proxy host:port} NTLM authorization proxy server & port
-download Download to local computer your voicemails from webpage
-delete Delete voicemails on Vonage webpage
-play Play downloaded voicemails
-log Write a log of the HTTP/HTTPS session to a file
-wave_dir [directory] Location to put downloaded voicemails. Defaults to local dir.
-player [system_command] Command to play wave files. Defaults to 'mplay32.exe'

Example, checking messages:
./von_msg.pl (will be prompted for username & password)

Example, pull down & play messages with proxy:
./von_msg.pl -username bladen -password ih8bush -proxy proxy.alkayda.com:8080 -download -delete -play

This tool can manipulate your Vonage voicemail messages in these ways:
* check inbox for new messages
* download messages from your inbox
* play downloaded messages
* delete messages in your inbox

I run this on WindowsXP from a Cyqwin window. If using a basic Cygwin installation,
you need to install some perl packages and also ssl source.

Very basic Windows/Cygwin installation instructions:

1) Download & install cygwin.
Run: http://www.cygwin.com/setup.exe
In the package selection tree, select "openssl097-0.9.7i-1". Get *both* binary AND source.

2) Compile openssl. In a cygwin window,
cp /lib/gcc/i686-pc-cygwin/3.4.4 /usr/local/lib # note: Crypt-SSLeay needs this
cd /usr/src/openssl097-0.9.7i-1
./config --openssldir=/usr/local/openssl no-asm # note: gcc had asm compiler troubles
make
make install

3) Install perl modules, in order:
URI-1.35
HTML-Tagset-3.10
HTML-Parser-3.51
libwww-perl-5.805
Crypt-SSLeay-0.51

For each module, do:
find on CPAN 'http://search.cpan.org'; download; extract tarfile.
In a cygwin window,
cd {extracted tarfile dir}
perl Makefile.PL
make
make install
