PostPosted: Sun Oct 09, 2005 7:56 am    Post subject: Need help for selecting the router for india... Reply with quote Back to top

Hi All

This is my first posting here. I am an Indian guy and going back to India for vacation, so planning to take the Vonage phone over there. Because it is too expensive to use the phone cards.
I need your help, i didn't purchase any thing. Neither router nor the adapter. I am from MP Indore, and i have the BSNL broadband connection over there.

(1) I want to know what router and the adapter will be good (?) because i saw on this forum some people complaint about the specific router. So if you have your personal experience then please suggest me about the right router. Do I really need router (?) or without that I can use my phone (?)

(2) We have the limit of 1GigaByte data transfer in a month, and if i will excess the limit then i need to pay extra money depend on the number of extra Megabyte used.
Does any one know how much data Vonage phone use if i talk for an hour (?)

(3) If i activate the phone here in the USA and will use here for a week and then i will take that with me to India, then is it gonna work there (?) or once you activate it in the USA you can't use in India(?)

(4) If i don't like then i can disconnect the service without loosing any money (?)

I am sorry I am asking too many question but I know some one here have the answers.

Thanks A a lot

Rick, I cannot answer your first question but I will try to answer your other questions. To answer your question requires a bit of math. If you use the best setting on Vonage which is 90kbps which is equivalent to a transfer rate of 11.25 KBps. kbps is kilobits per second and there are 8 bits in a byte. So if you divide 90kbps, you will get 11.25 KiloBytes per second. At this transfer rate, you will reach your 1 GB data transfer in 88,888.89 seconds or in 1481.48 minutes. So if all you did while you were there was to call America, you will have 1481 minutes of call time in a month. That's quite a lot.

That is dependent on the system in India, not here in America. Using a foreign ISP is always a challenge because they might have different settings which might forbid the use of certain ports which Vonage needs to use. You can only know by testing it there. The idea was that it would work anywhere in the world with a broadband connection so long as it was not illegal.

There is always some loss of money in shipping and handling costs since you pay for shipping when they first send it out to you and also when you return it back to them after you cancel. But the cost will be minimal (i.e. under $20) if you keep the service for only 1 month. Probably not worth the effort since you most likely will not spend that much money in India making calls will you?

I hope this helps.

mundy5 Thanks a lot for the reply,

if a set of router and adaptor work good here in usa, does it means it will work anywhere in the world same?

Ricky,

Your question is a valid one. The problem is that it is not up to Vonage to make the internet connection work properly. It is up to the Internet Service Provider (ISP). In your case, it is the BSNL broadband connection in India that will make or break the quality of your phone connections. In other words, Vonage is only as good as the connection you have in India. If the connection is poor, then your phone connection will be of poor quality (i.e. missing sounds, breakup of voices, loss of sound, etc). If the BSNL connection is of high quality, then you phone connection will be of high quality so long as it is properly configured and legal in India.

I hope this helps, mundy5

Just to add to that, if you have a friend who is already there in India with access to the internet service, have him run a test from www.testyourvoip.com. That should tell you whether your ISP in India is providing service that will be good with Vonage.
