Here is my dilemma:

If I plug my new Linksys WRTP54G into my cable modem, my phone works fine over Vonage.

UNFORTUNATELY, my cable enters the house at the end of the house. In order to provide adequate connectivity throughout the house for both my wireless notebooks AND my other, wireless phones, I need my WIRELESS AND TELEPHONE connection to be in the center of the house.

What I’d hope to do was have my cable/cable modem/older WRT54G at the end of the house, where the cable comes in. THEN have the new WRTP54G cat5 connected in the center of the house, running the wireless and phones.

That won’t work, though. When I set up that way, the phone “can’t see” the internet, apparently.

Isn’t there ANY way to configure the WRT54G and the WRTP54G to have the voice adapter SECOND but still functional?

FYI: I configured my setup to have the WRTP54G first, then the WRT54G. The phone worked, but the computers couldn’t see the internet. So, at this point, I’m screwed either way!

I know just enough about networking to be dangerous, so please be as elementary as possible…

Thanks
MK

I have done what you are trying to with my WRT54G and my RT31P2 Adapter.

I got the settings from the PAP2 user guide:

http://www.linksys.com/servlet/Satellite?childpagename=US%2FLayout&packedargs=c%3DL_Product_C2%26cid%3D1117044308483%26site%3DUS&pagename=Linksys%2FCommon%2FVisitorWrapper

Go there, and click on "User Guide", then go down to Appendix A (p.15). That will give you a list of the UDP ports you need to open for your phone. The trick is knowing what IP your adapter gets when it is plugged into your WRT54G. Your best bet would be to go in and give the adapter a fixed IP instead of obtaining automatically.

One thing to note though, I have a friend who had his adapter behind his WRT54G and had bad call quality whenever he did very bandwidth intensive stuff on his PC. I would bet that the Vonage Adapter does some sort of Quality of Service (QOS) to make sure that the voice packets go through with a higher priority -- if that's the case, that might only work if it were first in line off the cable modem. [EDIT: this poster http://www.vonage-forum.com/ftopic8853.html mentions that the WRT54G has QoS, so maybe my friend had a different router ... YMMV]

Post any follow-up qustions...

Chris,

Thanks. That, combined with this:
http://blog.kevindonahue.com/archives/2004/12/connect_linksys_rt31.php
got me closer. At one point, I had both phone1 light and dialtone -- not sure what I did, but I lost both. Got back the phone1 light by configuring AGAIN per the above link, but now have no dialtone. My provisioning status = failed; my registration status = done, and my call1 status = always IDLE.

I'm going to again power all off and back on, and hope for the best. One question you may be able to help me with. On my 2nd router's setup page (the router/phone adapter), I am set for static IP. I have the settings in per the link above in the "Internet" setup section of that page. There's also a "Network" setup section, which asks for my Router IP address (local). I've entered the IP address (static) of the router/phone adapter (on whose configuration page I am). I am guessing that's right, but am not sure.

If you have any further ideas, I'd appreciate 'em!
Thanks

Glad to hear you're making progress.

To answer your question, for the "Network" setting on the router/adapter, you should be able to leave that as 192.168.15.1, which sounds like what you've described doing.

It sounds like you have everything setup correctly...

Maybe reset both Routers to the factory defaults then reconfigure using the correct settings you know now. I find that if I'm fiddling with equipment too much that sometimes I forget one little setting that I changed that messes me up later.

I'm a little afraid if I "start from scratch" I'll lose/forget something, but I may have to!

Thanks for your help...

Let me bug you one more time -- I've discovered that I'm RECEIVING calls -- just still not getting that dial tone. Does that point you to anything I might be able to adjust?

Thanks

Okay, every time I reboot the wrtp54g (phone adapter router), I am no longer able to connect to it. Once it reboots, it can't be seen on the network. I have to direct-cable it, reset it to factory defaults, and then reconfigure it.

What am I likely doing wrong??

And, on top of that, the firmware on the wrtp54g is still at 1.00.20. I can get the incoming calls, though, after I reconfigure everything. But still no dial-tone.

Vonage tells me to connect my non-phone router to my phone router by putting the cable in the INTERNET jack. Is that right?

The Internet jack on the phone adapter should go to one of the four switch jacks on the WRT54G, then the Internet jack for the WRT54G goes to the cable modem.

Is that how you have it?

Well, I didn't -- but I do now. Now, I have a dial tone. Incoming calls ring once (before you hear the ring on the caller's line) and, if you pick up, you hear nothing. Caller continues to hear RING, even though you've picked up.

Outgoing calls don't go -- I was going to detail what they DO do, but now I've again lost the phone1 light on the adapter and have lost the ability to contact the adapter through my internet browser!

I admittedly didn't "reset" the adapter after moving the plug -- because I know it'll mean having to reconfigure it again -- but I'll do that next and report back.

Thanks for walking me through, and for your patience!
