PostPosted: Sat Oct 08, 2005 9:29 pm    Post subject: Permanent Outbound Caller-ID Blocking Reply with quote Back to top

I trolled around the Vonage website and searched here also, but I wasn't able to find a real answer to my question, so I figured that I would ask here.

Vonage doesn't offer any phone numbers local to my area, but I have an extra mobile phone with a boatload of conditional call forwarding minutes each month. The end result being: I can forward my extra mobile phone's number to my Vonage phone (to give the illusion of having a local number.)

The problem is: When I call out using my Vonage phone it'll display the non-local number. Is there way to call in and have it set so my Vonage line permanently blocks outgoing caller-ID. I'm aware that I can *67 each time I make a call, but that would get old after a while.

Thanks for any suggestions, tips, or help you-all can provide.

Doubt it, problem is that those incoming calls to your cell number will cost you money (since your cellphone company will charge for the forwarding and the cost of the call) O_o

I read the original poster as stating he is using minutes on his cell, that he has a "boatload of", to call forward, so he isn't concerned about using them.

From what I can find on Vonage.com and searching, there isn't any feature offered to default to CallerID blocking, it is only available on a call by call basis using *67 as you noted. Funny they don't offer this, as the 'old fashioned' telco's do.

From http://www.modemtools.com/block-caller-id.htm :

Permanently Blocking Caller ID

You can also block Caller ID for all calls made from a given telephone line. Note, however, that your local telephone company may charge you a small fee for enabling the service for your phone line.

* Contact your local phone company and request per-line blocking;
* Shall you need to un-block your number for a given call, you can unblock your Caller ID for one call at a time by dialing *82 in front of the actual phone number. Repeat this for every call you want your ID unblocked; you should dial *82 for every call you want your ID unblocked.

Federal Legislations
The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) requires phone companies to make available free caller ID blocking and unblocking. The rules do not apply to emergency calls (state rules govern companies obligations to honor caller privacy requests to emergency phone numbers).

I know permanent caller-ID blocking is illegal in FL, thus no land-line based phone co in FL offers it. Would be rather nice... 'though in general I'm pretty vigilant about dialing *70 before any call where I don't want the other party to receive my number.
