PostPosted: Sat Feb 14, 2004 12:57 pm    Post subject: Outbound Transmission Problems Reply with quote Back to top

I am consistently having trouble with my outbound (outgoing) transmissions breaking up or have complete loss of transmission. The person that I'm talking with has trouble hearing what I say (sounds like I'm in a box) or hears nothing at all. It reminds me of a bad cell phone connection. However, inbound transmission is clear.

I have asynchronous connection, but my speeds have been measured around 341 KB/sec upload and 927 KB/sec download. I know they vary. But shouldn't that be fast enough to carry a voice transmission?

I have my Vonage box (Cisco ATA 186) sitting behind my Linksys router (BEFSR41). I'm running on a TimeWarner Road Runner cable modem (Toshiba PCX1100).

I have not upgraded the firmware on my router because I had similar problems with another application. I've also have done the recommended Port Forwarding to no avail.

Could this be a problem with my cable modem?

Gary

It isn't a spyware problem because it happens with or without the computer on. Anyway, I'm using a Mac at home so it would have limited (if any) exposure to spyware and viruses.

One of the other members of the forum posted that he was having trouble with Road Runner too. I'm going to discuss this problem with Road Runner's tech staff this week.

Apparently they are planning to provide a similar service in the future.

Find any solution for your problem?

I've mentioned this before. The PCX1100 was the cause of my problems as well. My situation was that any amount of network activity from the PC was audiable in the phone. Pingplotter showed occasional high pings and a moderate number of lost packets even though overall it was OK.

Switching the modem made all the difference. Have you run pingplotter?

Sorry for asking! Mad If you mentioned this before, you did not bother to update this thread with that information. I am not having any problems with my MTA or service at this time. I was just curious as to your problem and any solutions found.

Sorry! Didn't mean it that way. Just that I've mentioned it before on other parts of the forum. In fact, if you search there is a link to an article talking about a known problem with packet loss on these modems. I really didn't mean it the way you took it, just that this is a known problem.

I was not the original poster, so, no I didn't update every possible thread that mentions the 1100. In fact, this post predates my use of Vonage, so I probably hadn't even seen it before.

I guess I'm fuzzy from the time change.

Ok, thanks for the clarification and explanation. Smile

I have RoadRunner service but have a Treycon (sp?) which seems to work but does give off a burnt plastic smell. Blow Nose

I had an old Hughes Satellite system that had a modem that gave off that smell. Not to mention it allowed me to turn off the heat in the house -- it was toasty. I was always afraid it was going to eventually burn my house down.
