I use MightyFax to fax via my regular Vonage line as well with no special settings. I dont even do the *99 or anything. Just set the baud rate to 9600 and fax away just like im making a regular telephone call. Works great. Winfax didnt work though. I dont know how well a regular fax machine would work but im sure it would work fine.

Why drop the bitrate? I've had no trouble faxing at 33600 w/ECM on. Even color faxes went through (yes, there is a color fax standard).

I. The deal with Vonage fax lines
The deal with Vonage fax lines is this:
A fax machine's purpose in life is to turn pictures into data, turn data into sound, send it over a phone line, turn that sound back into data, and that data back into a picture.

Vonage's sole purpose in life is to turn sound into data, and turn data back into sound

Put them both together and you get the problem with sound-i-fied data being turned into data-fied sound.

Picture-(Fax scans)->data-(fax sends)->sound-(Telephone adapter chops into)->data-(Telephone adapter reassembles into->sound->(Is interpreted by fax machine as)->data-(is drawn as a)->picture

So the irony in the Vonage Fax User's Guide shows some tips for faxes... like "Turn the baud rate down to 9600" and "Turn on international mode" and "disable Error Correction Mode(ECM)". Basically make it as primitive as possible to correct any problems with the fax being abused.

II. I forgot what chapter II was going to be.
Oh yeah- what Vonage has done to stop fax machines from thinking too hard: They invented the "Vonage fax line".
Yes it's pared down in the sense there's no Voicemail or most of the other features (Voicemail on a fax line is a conflict of interest)
The Vonage Fax Line is a dedicated data line. Try to use it for voice and you'll probably sound pretty odd.

III. Cost-effective solutions

I'd recommend the top-secret "Basic 0" plan, with a secondary fax line. They still don't offer standalone fax line service, but here's what you do:
a) Sign up, as normal, for Vonage. Wait for the device to be provisioned
b) A day or so later (longer on weekends) add-a-fax from the option in your web account
c) When the device arrives (Or before if you're so inclined) call and ask for account management (Or dial their direct 1-800 number if you have it) and ask to "suspend the primary line"; in other words have it put on the Basic 0 plan.

Breakdown: $6.99 a month ($8.70 after taxes unless you live in the glorious democratic republic of New Jersey) for the primary line
$9.99 per month for the fax line (Probably $11.79 after Federal Excise Tax and Regulatory Recovery Fee- but I've never had a fax line so I can't figure out the voodoo math. NJ Residents add sales tax too)
Like 20 bucks a month for unlimited incoming calls and vonage-to-vonage calls on the primary line, and 250 minutes of outgoing fax (unlimited incoming faxes) on the fax line.

You can't get that from SBCerizonT&TBellSnourth Inc.
