I was just pondering on the back porch about the reverse 911 system and Voip. I remember about two years ago when I had Verizon as my home telephone service I received a reverse 911 call about a missing child. They also use the reverse 911 system for other localized emergencies. For instance if you live by the Port of Tampa they use the system to notify residents of an ammonia leak or chemical spill/fire. If you had Voip I dont beleive the system would work and you would not even know of the danger. Maybe local governments should have a hotline you could call for Voip users to register their telephone number for the reverse 911 system. Has anyone received any reverse 911 calls on their Vonage line?

I have never heard of reverse 911, so most likely no.

I don't see why it wouldn't unless you have an out of area number.

I would think maybe it still works because I ported my number but I wonder if I were to get a number from Vonage if the reverse 911 system that Hillsborough County Florida, and the City of Tampa have would work.

If you get a number from Vonage they would not be able to determine your address to send localized reverse 911 calls. So if you lived by the port of tampa and there was a major chemical fire you would die because you would not receive the warning via the reverse 911 system.

You can get more information about Reverse 911 at http://www.reverse911.com/ btw if you have no idea what it is.

What ever happened to the old simple days when the firehouse had a big siren on the roof?? That was good enough for air raid warnings and a general alarm. When you heard it you simply turned on your local radio station to get the warning. Must have been to simple?

BTW.. Your not doing much to make my oncoming visit to Tampa for the NAFTS reunion next week sound safe! I take it you don't work for the visitors bureau.

Heheh...Not that there are alot of problems around the port. I remember there being one ammonia leak a year ago and that was it.

Good thing you are not visiting this week. The weather has been cloudy and crappy. Nice and warm though Lol

As more and more states adopt Reverse 911 (due to the funding from the federal Homeland Security budget), I am interested in knowing if calls will be received on the Vonage network.

I read an article in my local paper yesterday about plans of statewide adoption by the end of 2006.

As taken from the Sigma Communications site (provider of the technology):

"E911 Data Ready - You can import your existing E911 telephone database (where available) into REVERSE 911®. If your local telephone company is not compliant with F.S. 106-81, Sigma can provide you with the "best of class" commercial database for your system. Either database can utilize the GIS mapping technology that you already use."

It appears that E911 must be in place for calls to be received on the Vonage network. However, there also appears to be alternatives for providing telephone number data to the Reverse 911 system; therefore, I am interested in knowing if, when and how Vonage will integrate into this system.

If anyone has knowledge of Vonage's plans, please share.

Thanks a million.

Well,

Last night, a 400 acre wildfire hit the ridge behind me. Within 30 minutes, we had to evacuate. This occurred quicker than the local media could get information. This was for a targeted area of about 30 homes in a rural mountain area.

Our county used a targeted reverse 911 system to force mandatory evacuations within a 1 mile radius, and put on notice those homes in a 4 mile radius. I wouldn't have known had I not been conversing with my neighbors that had landlines.

methinks I'm going to have to drop Vonage for safety sake. Sirens on firehouses miles away don't tell you where the wildfire is, and the radio is slow and leaves things open to question.
