I was dialing a 914 areacode this AM and must have dialed 9114 because instead of my client picking up, I received the city's Police Department. I confirmed my misdial, and was happy to see my call doesn't seem to go to an automated number anymore.

I imagine that would only happen with abuse or malicious intent...how many accidental 911 calls happen per year? a lot I would bet...

Yeah, I think when I asked if the was XYZ incorporated, and asked for Rob, she realized it was an honest mistake.

Yeah I think singing Public Enemy's "911 is a Joke" is pretty much fair game for arrest. If you just called and hung up they'd probably send someone to check out your house too.
But congratulations on your 911 being complete! 1 down, 29,999 to go.

it's not complete...it's just another line at the police dept. it wasn't e911 anyway if that's what you're getting at.

I used to live in Atlanta. Down there it doesn't matter whether it is POTS, Voip, cell, payphone, etc. Calling 911 was a crap shoot when I was there. I would call 911 (you see a lot of car wrecks in Atlanta) and finally hang up after waiting on hold. Hopefully they fixed that by now. But, if you are traveling through Atlanta carry a first aid kit with you.

I should note that this woman used a LANDLINE phone and this was the response she got...
===================================

911 call takes 30 minutes for response

10:21 PM CDT on Tuesday, October 4, 2005

By Jeremy Desel / 11 News (www.khou.com)

Jeanne Garcia thought Tuesday would be just another day at the Label Warehouse. Just before 1 p.m. everything changed when a customer became enraged.

"He just stuck his arm in my chest right here. I still have the marks on my shirt from his arm. Just went back into the rack of clothes," she says.

Garcia did what she knew she should and called 911 while she was trapped behind the counter with an irate customer. The customer was yelling "If you touch my money I'm gonna hurt you."

The emergency service confirms the first call came at 12:48 p.m. For some reason, the call-taker rated it a Priority 3, the lowest level call.

Help didn't come. Another call at 12:54 p.m. with Garcia telling dispatchers, "He's trying to come over the counter," still a low-rated call.

It was not until another call at 1:09 p.m. that the call was upgraded to a Priority 1.

By then 39-year-old Graylon Ford had finally left the store.

Officers arrived and caught up with him down the block.

They had to use a Taser on Ford to subdue him before arresting him on assault charges.

Officials at the Houston Emergency Center are reviewing the case, but the first take is not a good one.

"By the second call it seems that the priority should have been raised to a higher priority due to the suspect's actions," says H.E.C. spokesperson Joe Laud.

Several different call takers handled the various calls, at least four of them from the store.

"Just imagine if he had a knife or a gun and it took them that long to respond," Garcia says.

For Jeanne Garcia they were 30 very long minutes.

"It shouldn't take that long to respond to any call. Especially when you have peoples lives at risk," she says.
