Ok I made a serious uh-oh.

I got a bit frisky and went ahead and unlocked the PAP2. Now I can't connect to Vonage and get a dial tone...

I've tried rebooting multiple times, reflashing firmware, nothing seems to work...

Anyone know what to do? I have the web interface fully available and I can change settings.

Cry Cry Cry Cry Cry

I've very unhappy right now. Sad Sad

I almost bought a PAP2 at Circuit City the other day when I seen them in stock. Thought it might be fun to unlock it and screw with the settings.

I picked an extra PAP2 up at BB on Sunday when their sale started - Only $35 out the door plus a $10 Linksys rebate that doesn't require activation. Not as good as the deal Staples had, but I could actually get one at BB (Staples was sold out). I got it primarily as a backup in case mine fails - I can swap and have my service up quickly - but I've also been thinking it might be fun to play with unlocking as well.

You could use it unlocked with alternative Voip providers, but I'll probably just keep it as a Vonage spare. So far I'm happy with my Vonage service and would like to be a long term customer. Although how they handle their E911 rollout, Outgoing Calling Name and ACR might have me shopping in the future.

I guess I can understand the tremendous curiosity, I seriously doubt I will try to hack my PAP2 that I am using for service. I've said it in other posts, but since I got that thing from a store and got service going in less than 15 minutes I have had no problems. So I don't want to ruin a good thing. But, I can understand someone getting a free one and tinkering. But once you have tinkered what do you really gain? Does it have features that Vonage is not activating? If it is to change service providers I am still confused. Why? Because using what Vonage recommended gave me zero problems I wouldn't want to try anything different. Wouldn't any other company have something similar? Maybe not. I don't know because I have only had Vonage. But something sure is making this PAP2 hacking a hot topic.

A bunch of you guys out there know a lot more than me about this newer stuff. Is there some way you can set up these things to work with each other and nothing in between? Stupid question, but I get to ask at least one if not a bunch more. I could see someone using two adapters and the Internet to have a private connection between their house and a family member house or something.

While on the subject of adapters I am also curious at the various different troubles and adapter discussions. I am beginning to think that having a separate phone adapter from my router and my telephone is a good idea. Lower investment and easy to change out what is broken.

I probably just burned all my luck with this one.

I think it is better to get the things separate. I am more comfortable having a phone adapter and a router rather than having one box that holds both.

Oh and galion since I have unlocked my PAP2 I have seen what the settings look like. There is so many different things you can configure it's nuts. I see why Vonage locks it, because there are so many ways an unknowledgeable user can screw it up. But I would still prefer that instead of completely locking it, that they have a button or something that you can push to automatically download the config file from Vonage that will restore all the defaults that Vonage suggests. But you should also have the option to change a few things as you see fit.

A lot of the options I didn't mess with but I would be interested to. Yes the Vonage defaults are ok and all but I would still like to do a little customizing. I mean there are like a whole bunch of ringer options and codec options and other cool junk. But yea there's a lot of nifty options.

I don't know about allowing you to change anything, but I wish they'd let you see it, with everything "greyed out" so you can't change it. I'd love to at least know all of the parameters that they have to play with.
