I activated Vonage so I could save money on local & long distance phone service. However, I'm now paying double.
When I tried to transfer my phone # to Vonage I received an email saying I can't do it because my DSL is running over that line. BellSouth won't let me have DSL unless I pay them for local phone service. Vonage won't work without a broadband connection.
So how does anyone ever make this work economically? I don't have or want cable TV so that doesn't seem to be a viable option.
Is there a way of getting broadband Internet service by itself, without paying someone for some other basic service that I don't want? I just want to pay my $50 for Internet service and my $30 to Vonage for phone service. |

Some people just order the "Local calls only" or "Incoming calls only" for like $8.99 a month. I don't know about your phone company but on a lot of them this'll work. Heck, if you can't port the number without your DSL company pulling the rug out from under you, just lower it down to the cheapest possible service and get Vonage for outgoing calls. Anything it takes to lower that overall phone bill... |

$8.99 would be great, but when I called them (BellSouth), they told me the lowest price would be $35 per month. I will investigate it further. |

Your local cable company may be able to provide you with internet service without signing up for cable TV, although they usually charge more. It sounds like Bell South doesn't provide 'naked' or dry loop DSL. This is DSL without local phone service. You might also look into other DSL providers in your area. Maybe one of them can provide DSL without the phone line. A good source to research other providers is http://www.dslreports.com |
