Post subject: Number Portability -When?
When will we have number portability that will allow me to take my BT number over to
Vonage
?
What are the issues around number portability, are they regularity, technical or both?

Paul

I just signed up for
Vonage
today.
I wanted my BT number transferred also, I rang them up and asked, the lady I spoke to said that
Vonage
doesn't support this feature yet - implying that it would be added in the future. I then asked when it will be available, and she said she didn't want to say because she has never heard anything about transferring UK phone numbers to Vonage's control.

It's the same old thing.... Because they're not a uk company. Eveyone here will be the last to get anything.
I had an email today from
Vonage
answering a few questions. Basically Anonymous Call Rejection is not planned for UK only US
Number portability is US only
Feature codes ie replacing *67 to 141 and *123 to 1571 is unlikely and the American voice and the "pound" sign message is part of the system and although a UK version is being considered there's no plans to change it.
The constant reference to 441xxxxxxxxx is not going to be changed to the UK numbering scheme of 01xxxxxxx or 02xxxxxxxxxx
Why do these companies launch in UK if they can't give Uk customers a UK telephone system?????
Majority of people are used to UK way of things and without it it tends to put folk off. So as far as number portability is concerned I think there's going to be a long long wait......
Also on a different note MORE pressure is needed from people to get the likes of BT to offer broadband, without line rental. Naked DSL is the term.
Paying your broadband charge, plus the lowest line rental for a telephone line of £10.50 plus the
Vonage
charge of £9.99 doesn't really make things much cheaper, again another thing that puts people off.
We need action to make Naked DSL available in the uk, in order to make
Voip
worth while,,,

I can't see the problem with number portability.
They're available to be transferred from companies such as BT to Cable companies, using different networks.
And
Vonage
, I would think, would have had to get the numbers it has available from BT in the first place.
As for BT providing naked DSL, I agree totaly, however being lucky enough to live in an area that has cable broadband available this doesn't apply to me. I do not think
Vonage
is the right company for users of ADSL, it defeats the purpose of saving money. Perhaps keep your same BT phone number, pay the minimum amount line rental and then use Skype or some other company until such a time that naked DSL is available.
The individual that wants cheaper calls will need to do the maths with regards to what they have available in their area.
I'd quite like to see the Managing Director's opinion on this. Will we ever see a fully british version? And even one that also works with british hardware (such as satellite boxes) ?
And btw, what exactly is "The pound sign"?

Any comment from
Vonage
?
This is stopping me removing my BT line and saving money, if it is not going to happen I might as well drop Voange, I want to keep my existing number.

Vonage
telephone numbers in the UK are supplied by Gamma Telecom Holdings, not BT
It is usually the first 3 digits of your number that tell you it belongs to
Vonage
, or first 4 digits if you have a 7 digit number. Examples below:
Nottingham (0115) 822 6xxxx
Inverness (01463) 216xxx
Scarborough (01723) 336xxx
Ripley (01773) 306xxx
Dundee (01382) 006xxx
Derby (01332) 416xxx
Mansfield (01623) 706xxx
Middlesbrough (01642) 424xxx
Are all numbers that
Vonage
use and are all supplied by Gamma Telecom Holdings.

We would love to offer number portability. However there are a number of regulatory issues that have to be resolved.
In addition, number portability has to be negotiated individually with each of the existing phone providers--eg BT, Telewest and Ntl.
As you can imagine this is a time consuming process in order to come to a commercial agreement.
We have devoted significant resources to this and are working our way through all of the technical and commercial issues involved.
If you want to speed up the process, please write to OFCOM asking that they impose a requirement for naked dsl on BT!
We will try and keep you posted on this.

Hi Kerry,
Well, it's good to know that you're working on it. The person I spoke to when I phoned your support line hadn't heard anything about it and there isn't any details (that I could find) on the
Vonage
website about it.
I can appreciate how long it might take to have the software and aggreements in place to receive phone numbers from other companies, but could you keep us informed of any new developments somehow?

Kerry,
This post was almost 6 months ago now so I guess you should have some news on number portability by now?
I appreciate you have to negotiate with the different Telco's in the UK but I assume you are targeting them in terms of potential customers and therefore BT would be top of the list?
I am still waiting to transfer my BT number to
Vonage
and to be perfectly honest the first VIOP provider that offers me this option I'll take my business to them.
BT will be offering competitive
Voip
soon and will negate the need for the majority of the UK to port numbers, if you don't have NP by then your going to be in trouble!
Some, any update on where you are would be nice. I have seen no mention anywhere in any of your communications on NP.
Regards,
Paul
