Yes we are further along than we were 6 mths ago but it is still a long process. It is a very lengthy process dealing with the cable companies, for example and there have been regulatory hurdles to overcome.
In addition, as you are probably aware there are complexities associated with porting a number if a customer has broadband from an ADSL provider. Currently you cannto port your phone number without losing your ADSL connection. This is a result of numerous constraints imposed by BT and the unwillingness to provide naked dsl (unlike other countries). Today, you as a customer, cannot buy your voice service independent from your broadband supply unless you are a cable customer.
As far as the BT Voip service is concerned, you probably are aware that they do no provide geographic numbers and only offer telephone numbers in the 056 number range. Currently, you cannot certain customers from an 056 line since that number range has not been fully recognised across the country by other operators. in addition, 056 number range is not included in unlimited plans offered by many other providers--in fact you are charged a premium to ring an 056 number.

This does get a little complicated when your BB is provided over ADSL I must agree!
I am a cable customer with NTL so would it not be possible to get some agreements in place before others? I would love to drop my BT line.

You quite right here, I just had a good look at Broadband Talk and came away disappointed for many of the reasons you mentioned above plus the lack of free additional services. I thought BT were trying to be competitive but then they failed to market ISDN missing the boat so I guess they can do the same with Voip

While I don't have a specific date, I can say we are getting closer to having number portability available.
if you look carefully at the Gradwell announcement you will also note that they do not provide access to emergency services 999. In addition, if you port your BT number and you have ADSL service you will lose your broadband connection unless you sign up again with a new number.
That is one of the issues we are trying to address in the porting process.
All I can say is that it is a top priority for us but unfortunately isn't necessarily a priority for other operators in the UK!!

OFCOM ran a consultation on the Regulation of Voip Services, which ended in 10th May 2006. You can see the details at OFCOM. I spoke to OFCOM on 24th August, and was told that their recommendations will go the the OFCOM Board for approval on 5th September 2006, and if their recommendations are approved, then these will be published and they expect the Telco's and Voip are expected to implement this within a month. So hopefully, we should see that we are able to port our numbers away from BT, ntl etc.
I was with ntl and they were able to provide me with a telephone number which was the same as my date of birth 76yyyy. When BT lowered their prices on 1st august, I found them cheaper than ntl, so ported my number to BT - I now have a three month minimum contract with them, so hopefully when the contract is up, number porting should be a reality in the UK. Fingers crossed, it'll al be happening very soon.
I spoke to Vonage with regard to this on 24/08/06 after speaking with OFCOM, and they had no information regarding this, even though Vonage responded to the OFCOM consultation. Maybe it would be nice, when contacting Vonage that they are able to direct you call to someone who has specialist knowledge about your enquiry (ie Porting) instead of speaking to someone who has general knowledge about general problems.
In the area I live I cannot get cable services. BT provide me with a landline and I use TalkTalk for call packages.
if I could port my number over to Vonage from BT I suppose I would still have to pay bt for the line rental so I'm not sure what monetary savings I could make?

If your with TalkTalk then for £19 month you get Broadband and Phone with free local/national calls so there would be no need for Vonage? You also don't pay BT anything!
The £19 assumes you are off an unbundled exchange.
