6. Setup of Network ie Modem---->Vonage Adapter-->PC
Modem > Router > PAP2

7. Issue you are experiencing ie dropped calls, choppy audio etc
Some quality and echo issues.

8. DETAILED results from www.testyourvoip.com with a test call to Boston.

I really want to get a piece of that new firmware. Cool
I'm currently stuck on 2.0.13b firmware which is giving
me problems.

I have contacted Vonage support multiple times to try
to get my firmware upgraded but they say that they
can't "see" my PAP2 or something. One of the techs
said that it is registering with the proxy but they can't
access the config or something.

I have my PAP2 wired to the first port on the router
and it is set on a static ip and it is on the DMZ so that
the router firewall or other settings aren't interfering
with it. Wink

So I'm wondering how I can get my firmware upgraded.
I actually got transferred at one point to one of the
"higher-up" techies and he actually suggested that
maybe the PAP2 itself is defective and that they will
send me a new one. I tried to tell him that I purchased
it myself but he didn't seem to understand. Rolling Eyes

who cares? let them send you one.
at any rate, I would try powering it and the cable modem down, then bringing the cable modem back up, then the pap2, with the pap2 directly connected to the cable modem.

lol, the guy was suggesting to send me a new one but I think that they wouldn't actually send me one to keep. I want my own so that I don't have to just borrow one from them and have to worry about sending it back if I quit the Vonage service or paying those extra fees or whatever. Wink

I guess I can try to run it straight from the modem, although that will kind of suck because I won't be able to use the internet for a while. Cry

you have to send it back regardless if you want to avoid the fee. doesn't matter where you bought it.
and "a while" should be 2-5 minutes max. just let it update and then switch everything back. one of the lights should blink (power or status light) while it's updating and will stop when it's done.

If you can't get the firmware updates, it may well be a problem with the PAP2, which has a one year warranty from Linksys. It has nothing to do with not owning the adapter if they replace your defective one under warranty.

Ok, hold on I'm getting a bit confused here. Why would I
need to give them the adapter that I paid $50 of my own
money for if I leave the service? I didn't even do the $50
rebate thing so I don't see how they have any claim to this
adapter, it belongs to me..

Now Chris you are saying that if Vonage sends me an
adapter that it will be part of the warranty and be mine
to keep for good? Or do you mean that I would have to
get my adapter replaced through Linksys?

And reebok I'm confused again now, I thought that
firmware updates had to be sent to your device from
Vonage. But you are saying that if I let it sit it will just
update itself?

Thank you for your kind answers to my questions folks. Smile

while it defies logic, it's true. if you want to read a thousand posts on it, search this forum.
firmware updates do come from Vonage, but of course it's an automated process...it's not like they do each one by hand. basically your adapter connects to tftp.vonage.net and downloads the newest firmware and updates itself. this happens...every so often with a powered on device, but occurs every time the device is reset. powering down the device will accomplish that. my guess is you have some issue somewhere with the router that's blocking it somehow/someway. this is just a quick and easy test to see.

From posts I've read here, I understand that Vonage actually handles the warranty for Linksys on the retail purchased PAP2 - I haven't needed this so I can't give you any first hand evidence. But if you have it replaced under warranty, it is every bit yours, just as the original is - it is not a loaner from Vonage. A call to Linksys - whose customer service is still pretty good - would straighten out who will replace it under warranty. The number in my PAP2 install guide is 800-326-7114. The guide clearly states: "Linksys warrants to You that, for a period of one year, your Linksys Product will be...free of defects...", so it is a Linksys warranty.

Regarding the firmware upgrades, I don't know if it will auto-update, but it makes sense that it would, since there are so many adapters out there. It seems the only practical way for Vonage to manage distributing updates since the end user can't update it themselves. On the other hand, I do know for a fact that you can call support and have them force an update, which I understand is what you've been trying to accomplish. 3.1.6 seems to work perfectly by the way. Good luck getting to the bottom of this.

Hmm, so the adapter is every bit mine, yet I have to give it to Vonage if I quit their service?

Seems a bit odd in my book. Confused

I tried your suggestion reebok. I just hooked it up straight to the modem.
Both power and ethernet lights blinked for a few seconds and then power
led went steady. The ethernet light kept blinking quickly and the phone
light never came on. It stayed this way for ~20 minutes before I finally
unplugged it. About 15 minutes in I tried to check the voice menu but
nothing happened when I tried to get into it. I plugged the PAP2 back in
and the same thing happened again. This time I only waited about 6 minutes
before shutting it off. Then I booted up my router and plugged the PAP2 back
into that and the PAP2 booted up and the power light when steady and then
the phone light came on and it's back to normal and I can call people.

I checked the voice menu again and the firmware is the same, nothing seems to have happened.

Surely a firmware update could not take more than 20 minutes right?
Even if it could I would think that me turning off the power during it would kill the PAP2.
