I was thinking, maybe somebody could just help me do that hack thing so that I can manually update the firmware? I found this yahoo group thing that appears to have the firmware files for the PAP2 but there isn't really an explanation on how to do it.

sorry it didn't work. it's pretty odd that it has that old of firmware and isn't updating itself. I'm not familiar with how to do it manually, but good luck with it. if you can't ever work it out, you may as well get the device from Vonage (though it will likely be an rtp300 which many say has great voice quality but is significantly larger than the pap2)

From the Broadband Reports story referenced on the unlocking the PAP2 thread - I've not done this nor do I know if it works, but this is the "how" if you have the files (which have been removed from the same Broadband Reports thread:

[PAP2] Unlocking Guide

Moderator note: The firmware attached to this post has been removed from the site due to a complaint from the legal owner of the original firmware. Although we can't tell for sure, it is almost 100% likely that the firmware that was posted here is copyright, and re-distribution without permission is therefore illegal. End moderator note

A BIG Thanks to Matt for this one...

Follow these steps and your Linksys PAP2 will be unlocked. Provider settings do not get erased.

Several assumptions:
1. you can get to the WEB interface and set the USER password.
2. Ideally, the device has never downloaded updates, or talked to the provider.
3. You have a TFTP server setup on your network

For this example, Assumptions:
PAP2 is at ip: 192.168.1.5
TFTP svr is : 192.168.1.110

OK, lets go for it:

1. Put the following two files in the TFTP root folder.
2. Disconnect from the Internet (avoids downloading cfg files)
3. Boot your PAP2 in your network.
4. Browse to the web page of the PAP2.
5. In SYSTEM, set a User password of 1234
6. Click the SAVE SETTINGS button.
7. Refresh the link (you login with user and 1234)
8. modify the link to show (http)
»192.168.1.5/upgrade?tftp://192.168.1.1..
9. Examine the status leds.. Power should turn RED when it is done.
Give it a minute or two, dont interrupt it.
10. Once red, point browser at your PAP2. (our IP in this example is 192.168.1.5)
11. Click the "admin login" link near the top-right.
12. Click the PROVISIONING tab and set PROVISION ENABLE=NO.
13. Click SAVE SETTINGS.
14. Now, modify the link to show (http)
»192.168.1.5/upgrade?tftp://192.168.1.1..
15. Done. Your Linksys PAP2 will eventually reboot (2 blue LEDs) (BE PATIENT)
and you can click the "admin login" near the top-right. No PW needed.

This test uses specific firmwares.. These are not for any other use, so if you are looking for upgrade firmware for your PAP2, DO NOT assume that this will be them.. These are for unlocking your PAP2 unit.

Oh yeah. I was able to unlock two without any troubles.. your mileage may vary.

Again, Thanks Matt for all the work you put into making this possible.

Well since the mod took out those files I wasn't able to get those specific ones. So my PAP2 is still locked, I just upgraded the firmware with what I found at the other site. The firmware upgraded properly and everything and I checked the voice menu and it now reports that I have firmware version 3.1.6.

Very Happy

I got to say if anyone has problems updating their firmware this was a really easy way to do it.

Only problem that I seem to have is the LEDs behave a bit differently now.
The ethernet led acts exactly the same (constant on with occasional little blinks)
The Phone led acts the same also (constant on, blinking while a call is in session)
But the power led isn't the same, it used to be solid on all the time, but now it is doing 3 quick little blinks every 2 seconds and being not lit up in between those triple blinks.

I'm hoping that the power led is just a cosmetic issue or something and that there isn't a problem...

Great job gettng that firmware updated. I hope the 3.1.6 works well for you - it has for me. BTW, I read a post on Broadband reports (I have no way to qualify it) that Vonage will soon be pushing the 3.1.7 firmware. Hopefully with yours now at the correct current release, it will more readily take any future updates.

Well I must say everything seems to have improved so much. Although part of it might actually be the fact that I cleaned out some of the configuration changes that were in there. Because the tech people were changing a lot of crap and I think there was junk just stacking up and messing up the config.

But yea the quality now is so much better and I'm not getting any echoes so thumbs up from me. Very Happy

I'm going to try to stay up-to-date on the firmware now, I don't really mind if my device won't auto-update (I doubt it will) because now that I know the procedure and it is pretty easy I think I will just do it manually. Razz

Now if someone can find a procedure to unlock the PAP2, that hasn't been moderated, I might be tempted to unlock this thing just for kicks. Twisted Evil
