This topic was created in 2005 ! You cannot say it is a recent problem.

Yep my current user is fairly recent, I find it a lot easier to create new accounts than remember passwords for hundreds of sites. Mostly when they are such hight "public interest" sites like this one. I must have over 20 accounts at SlashDot and more than 50 on CoduGuru.

This only means that my last re-format (before I installed Firefox "Password Exporter") dates from at least last March (last December I think, for this laptop anyway). In any case this site is not on my "Must save user name and pswd at all cost" list.

So, thanks for your highly on topic reply, it really helps on the 800 numbers Vonage problem </sarcasm> Slow day at work?

I have called Vonage and told them the toll free number won't work, they gave me a non-toll free number to call.

I think Vonage should state this on the site stating that not all toll free numbers will work.

I just started on Vonage a few weeks ago and had no idea about this issue until I read this post here after finding these forums today. I was trying to call a Canadian 1-800 number the other night and couldnt get through, so I thought it was a technical issue on the end of company I was calling but it appears that is not the case.

I am appalled that Canadian 1-800 numbers do not work on Vonage Canada. And this is a known issue now for 2 years?! How am I supposed to call Canadian companies then? I don't want to waste cell minutes when I am already paying for phone service that should be working. I mean, the 1-800 number that wouldn't work was for my cell phone company. Why should I have to go and waste time trying to find a number to call that isn't the 1-800? Is this issue posted on Vonage Canada's website where people would readily see it? Because I went through things on there and didn't come across this. This si very disappointing news.

Hopefully someone from Vonage will reply and update on this situation.

Well don't expect anyone from Vonage to reply to this thread on this site you have to post on the official site for that.

I can however tell you that some 800 numbers work in Canada. If the number doesn't work then you can call Vonage and ask if they have a number listed that is not a toll free one. Also look on the company website and see if there is a non-toll free number listed.

Now regards to you calling your cell phone company, you can call them on your cell phone for free by dialing *611 or what ever your company is using to check the status of your minutes or what ever.

The reason why not all toll free numbers don't work in Canada is as stated before is because of the routing system, calls are routed through the U.S.

I hope this helps you out.

Thanks for the info and getting back to me about it. It doesnt really help much though unfortunately.

Thats great that some 800 numbers work, but how would I know which ones without calling and seeing if it works? So if it doesnt, I have to call Vonage, most likely wait around on hold, to get a number? So basically I'll be wasting 10 minutes to get a phone number when it should just be working properly in the first place. Also would I be calling the Vonage 411? And be charged $1.25 per call? Or would I call the customer support line?

As for calling my cell company, I called using my Vonage line because I didnt want to use my cell minutes, to call my cell company since I was at home at the time. Plus I was changing my phone number and in order to do that I had to call from a landline.

I understand the reason why the 1-800 numbers don't work... I just have trouble accepting it. It has me really annoyed actually. When you think about it, if you have phone service, it is reasonable to expect that you can call whatever number that you want and be able to get through to it. However that is not the case here.

Don't call Vonage 411 that will cost extra. When I have called Vonage usually the wait time is under 3 minutes.

I have a Rogers and a Bell cell phone when I call them using the *611 or what ever the number is that doesn't get charged against my free minutes.

yeah usually I do call *611, but in my situation at that time, I had no choice but to call on a land line. They couldn't update my phone if I was talking on it.

Sure the wait times might only be a few minutes to call Vonage to get the number, but its the fact that I have to do that in the first place in order to make a call that I want to make. Especially since this has apparently been going on for over 2 years now, why are they not doing something to address it?

The one company that I never tried, the other 3 big companies do offer toll free numbers that work with Vonage.

Also if you call Vonage and they don't have a regular number for you, they can patch you through.
