I haven't seen any proof that they are even doing that. None of my requests have been dealt with.
I just checked two more including one that I posted. Again one of them worked, and it did not used to.

I tried Telus 310-xxxx number yesterday to pay my last Telus bill after porting my number over to
Vonage
. It didn't work! Had to phone their 800 number instead which did work because it is a US accessible number. It was bitter sweet to be finally rid of Telus but to now have these 1-8xx and 310 issues.

Hello, tried to phone Revenue Canada 800 numbers nothing seemed to work and cannot find a 604 number. We are calling from Delta BC, anyone know of a number in Vancouver we can call using our
Vonage
phone. We are on the 778 area code which is supposed to be another 604 Vancouver area code, right, so why cant the 800 numbers be reached from our area code
again!!!!

778 is an "overlay" rather than "another 604 Vancouver area code" but that doesn't have anything to do with your problem. The number that you are calling for the Canada Revenue Agency is likely a "Canada Only" toll free number. Unfortunately, "Canada Only" toll free numbers aren't reachable from
Vonage
yet. Only "US Only" or NANP wide toll free numbers work, even from Canada. The easiest way to get through is to use a cell phone to access the number until
Vonage
deploys a Canadian call server to rectify this problem.
Check out this page of the CRA if you haven't already. The number that you need depends on the nature of your enquiry.

877-272-0528. Perhaps you can help us with another problem! When we receive a voice mail message I retrieve it by going to the computer, listen to it select it then delete it. Problem: It doesn't delete from our phone system and the stutter tone just stays there so we are unable to make another call until I go through the telephone procedure of deleting it, I prefer using the computer, I hate press 1 for this 2 for that star etc. too confusing for us but not for you young ones I know. Any advice or help you can offer us re this voice mail problem I would appreciate. I like it but with an answering machine you can still make calls even with messages waiting. Perhaps I am doing something wrong
again, thanks for help, Pauline

You're welcome! I was feeling guilty about by "778 rant" as I have done it here before. Note to self, stop ranting!
There are many others in this forum that could explain an overlay better than I so I will stick to plain English. An area code overlay is when a new area code is introduced into a geographic area that is already "occupied". For example, area code 604 used to be the only area code in southwestern mainland BC. Due to the impending exhaustion of new telephone numbers in the 604 area code, a new area code, 778, was created and "overlaid" in the same territory covered by the 604 area code. This avoids making customers having to change their area code which is what happens in a "split" as existing customers with 604 numbers get to keep them and only customers needing a new number are affected with an overlay. A "split" is what occurred in the mid 90s when the 250 area code was created for Vancouver Island and the rest of BC outside southwestern BC. You may remember that those folks used to be area 604 also and had to endure an area code change when the new area code was implemented. eg, They were once 604-xxx-xxxx and became 250-xxx-xxxx. A more detailed explanation is can be found here:

About your voice mail problem, it has been noted here in the forum that others have experience issues as well. So did I recently. You should still be able to dial out through the stutter tone though. Have you tried? Recently, my stutter wouldn't go away no matter what I did. Then, it wouldn't come on when I had a message. Now, it's working fine even though I didn't really do anything! You could try resetting your ATA or power cycling it but that may not solve the problem. Also, if you don't have a message on your voice mail but you have the tone, try leaving yourself a message by calling yourself from another phone and then deleting it through the phone. That might not work either however. Voice mail has been acting up and it's likely not your hardware causing it.

Any 800 number that I have tried recently has worked. Seems like the service is improving.
