PostPosted: Fri Sep 30, 2005 10:37 am    Post subject: Why maintaining a land line AND Vonage makes some sense Reply with quote Back to top

First, I ordered a land line because I tried all sorts of setups to get my Series2 Samsung DirecTivo work on Vonage to no avail -- and i really wanted the 4.6 upgrade. I really really thought about hacking or serial adapting the Tivo, but there were some pluses for the land line.

Upon moving into a new house in June, I ordered the cheapest land line SBC sells: a metered use line. 25 calls for $5.99/mth, $.08/call above that. Add touchtone ($.18) and taxes (~$7), I'm about the price of my Basic 500 line. I also kept Vonage.

I run my alarm and Tivo off the land line and to the "second line" in my office, where my cable modem and RT31P2 is. I use a Line1/2 splitter with 3 ports (Line1, Line2, Line 1&2 combined). I have a 2 line office phone that hooks to the combined line - and the RT31p2 plugs into the Line1 port, to run phones in the rest of the house (those "splitters" aren't one way).

I've had 3 instances where my cable's gone down - 2 from cable cuts from house contruction around me, one from TW outage. I wasn't in Pasadena when Rita threatened, but word was from a neighbor we had power the whole time.

Benefits of the land line:
I have phone service in power outage (on all phones with a cable switch in the office)
I'm able to use Internet dialup for cable outages
    DirectTivo works flawlessly
The alarm company is happy (but the were a little confused by the "I have two numbers" thing)

    An additional $15 per month
A little more complicated wiring setup (I'm on a 110 block anyway for all this, which is about as complicated as it gets, but it makes wiring new stuff up a cinch)

With a total telcom bill of about $32/mth for both services, I still beat my old SBC bill of $43 - and I have a backup line in the event of power failure or disaster. I know I went to Vonage for features and the price, but I'm very content with my land line benefits. Plus, it appeases the wife :).

If some are interested, I can post my wiring setup - I figure since I put it in when my house was built, it's as clean and straightforward - plus it's a good "how to use a 110 block" lesson.

I am done. I have tried almost all the suggestions I could find online over and over again, I give up. I am just going to pay to freaken $15 for the land line and be done with it. Needless to say I am not happy. Maybe if I ever lost power or a cable connection, hasn't happened in 10 years here I'd be more inclined to spend the extra. My point to switching to Vonage was to save money. I still will, but don't think this should be so hard for us. I have spent hours on the phone with Vonage, and sorry, I do not like the service. The woman I spoke to today knew nothing. Total waste of my time. My old tivo box is on it's last leg. I know the hard drive is on its way out. It happened to the box I had before this one. Now I have to go buy another one, and set it up. I am pissed at Vonage for not solving this problem, what the H?

Just curious...why MUST you connect your Tivo? Also, have you considered the serial connection method instead---if you really must connect the box.
