I just saw that Vonage has a 39.99 cancellation fee if you quit service during the first 12 months.
does this hold true for those who buy the ata (or ata/router) retail, or just for those who get the hardware directly from Vonage.
I could see this, if you get their eq, then quit, they are out the cost of the ata, but if you buy it retail, they have no loss.

If you get their equipment you have to send it back when you cancel service. I think the 39.95 may be refunded once they receive the equipment. I am not really sure about this. I wouldnt think if you buy the equipment there would be a cancelation fee.

My understanding is that you will be charged the 39.99 regardless if where you got the equipment from if you cancel within the first year. If you bought your equipment at a retail store, you should have received a rebate on it.

Their policy is to refund the 39.99 if you cancel within 30 days and return the equipment within 14 days after cancellation. However, I believe they generaly refund the cancellation fee anyway if you return the equipment within 14 days.

what if you want to keep the equipment and dont care about the 39.99 returned to you? can this be done? I would rather keep the router (rtp300), since if i did cancel, I dont have any other router but need one for my home network (2 pc's on cable modem)...I sold my old linksys router on ebay, after receiving the rtp300 and signing up with Vonage service. I didnt see any use for having 2 routers with only 2 pc's on my home network, and I ended up getting about 25.00 for it. it was only a (wired) linksys befsr41 version 1 anyways.

You can keep it if you want Zippy. cheap router for $40... and then if someday down the line YOU want to have Vonage agin you can prolly use it at that time.. Smile

it's just that most ppl want to have their $40 back so they send in the router, if you want it, then keep it..

OK, I know they charge the $39.99 cancellation fee if you cancel service at any time within the first 12 months, but what if you cancel/leave them after the first 12 months, am I to assume there won't be a $39.99 fee once you've been with them for a year and you'll get to keep the RTP300 for free???

what Vonage is doing is totally iilgeal!!!! First they are forcing people to buy their **** ass equipment, and they tell you, you get a rebate, and then most of the time they don't honor the rebates. and then they want us to GIVE back the hardware that we OWN. this is STEALING. and as far as the $39.99 fee goes, i don't think its just for the first year. it's until you return the hardware no matter how long you've had the service. they do this so that they wont loose costumers.

http://vonage.com/features_terms_service.php

3.6 Termination Fee (Does Not Apply to Business Plus Customers). You will be charged a termination fee of $39.99 per voice line if your Service is terminated for any reason during the first twelve months following the activation of your Service.

True. Nevertheless, it's easy to understand the irritation. "No Annual Contracts" is in big print right on the Vonage home page. The termination fee is buried in the small print, and it seems to me that it amounts to an implied contract.

that post in direct response to MikesF271974 who stated "i don't think its just for the first year. it's until you return the hardware no matter how long you've had the service. they do this so that they wont loose costumers."
despite the fact it was right below it and directly answered his statement, I should have been more clear or quoted due to the thread length.
