I got my new Linksys RTP 300 router/phone adapter from Vonage and I unpacked it and started it up as per the instructions and managed to get all the right lights to light up on the router. I pick up the handset and I get no dial tone. I proceed to power down the cable modem and router and wait 10 minutes and power it back on and yet no dial tone.

I call customer support and I got a friendly assistant who kept making some changes at the server to no avail. I've spent close to an hour on the phone but still no dial tone and no one knows what the problem is.

Tech support says that the device is registered with the Vonage server, resetting it to factory defaults and trying again didn't help.

I am wondering if it could be a problem with the router itself or is there something else that's wrong here.

My setup is pretty simple. A cable modem connected to the Vonage router and a computer connected to the ethernet port of the Vonage router.

Here's an update to the problem. I got second level tech support look at the problem and he told me that was going to send me a new router to see if that solves the problem.

After I hung up, I picked up the Vonage phone and heard no dial tone and I decided to give the the wire that goes into the Vonage phone jack a wiggle and voila! I got a dial tone. The moment I let the wire go, the dial tone died. So it was a loose contact with the phone jack. The wire fits well into a regular phone jack, so it seems that there is no contact between the phone wire and the connectors inside the phone jack.

So I'm going to get the replacement router to fix this problem.

I have a question for you...how did you call customer service if your phone was not getting any dial tone....no i am just joking, but couldnt resist....but to add to you post....When i first got my rtp300, about 2 weeks ago, and connected everything exactly as described in quick intallation instructions, and then powered on the rtp300, all the lights came on and I thought everything was good to go, then when i picked up my Uniden 900mhz (older model with answering machine built into it) phone to make a call, and test it out with someone for the first time, I had no dial tone either, and wondered what the heck could be wrong,... so I decide to try this: I unplugged the power to my phone from wall outlet for a few seconds then plugged it back in, and tried for dial tone..and yep it was now getting a dial tone and working great ever since. I have no idea why i had to do this but thats what I did and it worked.

on the second part of your post about the loose phone port, did you try plugging it into the phone port #2 hole on the rtp300?..I dont think it matters if you use port 1 or port 2 for phone line, but if you need to use both cause you have 2 numbers via Vonage, then you may have a problem.
one last thing is that little clip on the phone wire itself, that holds it into the phone port hole still there? cause if it is not, then maybe that is why it keeps coming out of the port hole.
I also have had this third scenario happen to me where I moved the rtp300, grabbed it firmly, and moved it a few inches to leftside on top of my desk, and somehow the plug pulled out slightly from the back of the rtp300, giving me no dial tone, until i firgured out what had was wrong then plugged it back all the way in.
I have no stand for my rtp300, like everyone else that never got one, as it is an optional accessorry for 17.00 from linksys directly, yes 10.00+ 7.00 for S&H,for a piece of plastic, but I did notice that if the rtp 300 is laying down..it gets hotter than any normal router that i ever owned, but if I stand it upright, it stays a lot cooler. it will stand upright fairly easy, even without the 17.00 stand as long as it is on a flat surface, just make sure it is in a well ventalated area also to help keep it cooler.

It does matter. If you only have 1 Vonage number, then only the phone 1 port will be active. If you plug into phone 2 you'll get a message from the router indicating that it's the wrong jack.

Vonage CS could disable phone 1 and enable phone 2 if the OP told them about the connector problem, but in his place I would opt to wait for the new router. No sense having equipment that's not right when you can get a free replacement.

Well, I noticed that my WRTP54G (same design as the RTP300) also ran hot. Ever since I put it in the basement, which is always very cool even on a hot summer day, the router is perfectly cool to the touch. Lol

Second level tech support switched the phone port from #1 to #2 and I still had the same problem. So both my phone jacks are faulty.

Thanks for the tip on keeping the router vertical! that last thing I need is for this thing to fry it's brains.

Uh oh. My alarm bells are ringing. Two bad jacks? I'd check the cable that you're using.

The cable works fine when I connect it to my regular phone line jack.

Interesting. Coincidences like two bad jacks always make me suspicious. Have you tried wiggling the cable when it's plugged into the regular jack? How about reversing the cable end for end before plugging it into the Vonage equipment and phone?
