PostPosted: Tue Sep 27, 2005 10:36 pm    Post subject: Inconsistent dial tone with Vtech 2656 Reply with quote Back to top

I just received my RTP300 Router from Vonage. The phone I'm using is a Vtech 2656 expandable cordless phone system. So far my internet connection is working fine using the router - however, I only get a dial tone one time before losing it.

If I reboot the router, the dial tone comes back once, but if I hang up, the dial tone is gone. I tested with another phone, and it seems to get a dial tone all of the time.

For a few hours at one point, I WAS able to get a dial tone with the VTech, but it went away and now it is consistenly gone.

Tech support was no help. Could this be an issue with the router or do certain phones not work right with Vonage? I really don't want to have to go buy a new phone - the point of switching to Vonage was to save money!!

Anyone have any suggestions for me to try?

Thanks..

Just curious...when this problem happens with the VTech and you hang up, does the Phone light on the router blink? If so, the VTech phone really isn't hanging up the line.

Well, I've used the RTP300 with over 10 different phones now and haven't encountered a problem like that. If the Phone light continues to blink on the router after you've hung up the phone, then the problem resides in the phone. To prove it, place a call on the VTech, then hang up... if the light is still blinking, disconnect the wire that connects the VTech phone to the RTP300 and see if the blinking stops.

Also, you didn't post how you have it set up. Are you going through the household wiring or straight into the RTP300? Bad/miswired household wiring can cause all sorts of oddities.

I am going straight into the router from the phone on phone line 2 (customer support switched me to that port as part of the troubleshooting) - The router is connected directly to the cable modem.

The "Phone 2" light is steady on after I hang up. My internet light is blinking a lot though, not sure what that's all about - none of the "ethernet" lights are blinking along with it..

I read a post somewhere about trying different phone cords because of the IP phone using a different pair of wire than a normal land line. Doesn't make sense to me, but I tried a cord that looks to have all fours wires connected at the RJ-11 and it doesn't work any better..

Thanks for your help.

When the Phone 2 light goes on steady.... when you pick up the phone again, does it start blinking again and do you get a dial tone? While the phone cord could be suspect (faulty), there isn't any difference between the type of wire you should use to connect your phone to the Vonage adapter and what you would use for your land line.

The light does not blink when I pick the phone back up. And I don't (usually) get a dial tone until I reboot the router again. Every once in a while I'll get a dial tone, but it is very rare, and then it goes away if I hang the phone back up.

Anyone have any ideas? Should I try and get them to send me a new router, or is the problem most likely with my phone?

I found another phone that I plugged into the router - this phone gives me a dial tone every time. I put a splitter jack on the back of the router so that both phones can be hooked up. The Vtech phone still doesn't get dial tone - however, if I turn on the Vtech phone, then turn on the other phone, I hear dial tone at both phones...
