I am studying Voip for a course I am taking, specifically Caller-ID services. Does anyone know where I can get more in depth information on the Caller-ID services Vonage provides? I am particulary interested in knowing what information is sent/recieved by both parties, where it is stored, how it is authenticated? Perhaps some there are some white papers, RFCs, or protocol breakdowns out there I have not been able to find. I would appreciate any help anyone could give me.

There are two issues here. If you are taking a Voip course then you need to understand how SIP works. http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/product/voice/sipsols/biggulp/bgsipov.htm and more specifically the components of the SIP Address and especially the "Display Address".

If you want to know how caller ID works then you need to understand how SS7 works. http://www.ainslie.org.uk/callerid/cli_faq.htm may be of some use.The standards for caller ID are documented as TIA-777-A. You may be able to get access to the TIA documents via your schools engineering library.

If you want to know how the two works together you might try. http://www.pt.com/tutorials/iptelephony/tutorial_voip_sip.html

Be aware that the UK uses a different Caller ID protocol than the USA (and US/Canada-spec Vonage adapters) use.

The links were informative but mainly focused on PSTN Caller-ID info. I am still unsure if there is a standard protocol for sending Voip Caller-ID information in Voip to Voip calls and Voip to PSTN calls. Is there anywhere I can find information specifically about Voip Caller-ID protocols or maybe the way Vonage implements it?

Vonage to Vonage calls, and in fact all SIP calls are connected using a SIP address. A SIP address is much like an email address in that it contains a routable address and an optional display name. That is the caller ID information.

Calls sent by Vonage to the PSTN simply contain the account holder's PSTN number. That number is used by the recipients telephone company to look up caller ID information.

The SIP address is sent in the form of username@domain I believe, but what is uncertain is who sends the address. If a user wants to make a call, presumably they've registered their address with the Registrar. When the caller supplies the address for the person they wish to speak with, the message is forwarded along appropriately via proxies. But does the caller directly supply thier SIP address to the destination or does the Registrar? In either case is there some sort of authentication of the caller's address in case they have attempted to spoof it?

Basically I haven't been able to find any reference to a standard protocol for delivering authenticated Caller-ID info in Voip communication. I assumed that such a standard would likely exist, but it seems each company implements it how they see fit. This is why I wanted to see specifically how Vonage implements Caller-ID down to each message that is sent in the process. If anyone has any more information about this I would appreciate the help.

One clue on how Vonage is doing this can be found in the SoftPhone forum. There are threads there discussing the ability to change outgoing caller ID display name by modifying a string in the executable file.

Therefore it is likely that at least that component of the address, the display name, is generated by the customer's equipment.

If you have a softphone account it would be straightforward enough to test out the different scenarious that you are discussing.
