I have the following configuration:
Internet-->VT100-->Microsoft Router-->Multiple PC's.
Everything works great with this setup except accessing my FTP server from the internet. I have port forwarding setup on the router to my desktop PC with the FTP server which used to work prior to adding the VT100 to the mix. Do I need additonal port forwarding setup on the Motorola device? Thanks in advance for your help. |

I finally got my FTP site back up after tinkering with it for two evenings. I couldn't tell you what magic step I performed to make it work, since I tried everything once. Tech support bumbled around with it for an hour or so, but that was essentially a waste of time.
Now it works, but FTP seems to fail much more often, and I still don't think PASV mode works right at all.
My final solution involved removing my old router/firewall and replacing it with a plain old "dumb" hub. The NAT in the MTA and the NAT in my old router simply refused to play nice.
One key point that gave me fits: in this configuration, I can't see my web or FTP server using my external "real" URL from inside the firewall. If I get outside the firewall, it works. I guess the MTA isn't smart enough for that. I probably wasted a couple hours trying to solve that one.
All in all I think the current MTA technology, while offering decent Voip service, still isn't ready for prime time in anything but the simplest configurations.
Why couldn't they just add a DMZ setting in the port forwarding? |

If you have your ATA configured to do NAT/DHCP (default settings) you need to forward port 21 from the ATA to the IP address that it assigned to your router. Another configuration, and the one I prefer, is to disable NAT/DHCP on the ATA. That will put the ATA in passthrough mode and you won't have to manage port forwarding on 2 devices. |

When I turn off NAT, my internet connection no longer works. I also tried moving the ATA behind the router which works ok however the sound quality appears to be worse with this configuration. I like the idea of the ATA in front of the router if I can get it to work. Suggestions? |
