I just signed up in the UK and set up a softphone account. the softphone that comes as standerd is the X-pro which the call quality is so bad as to be unusable. i can hear the caller but my words are broken and a lot of static on the line. I have since tried the sjphone which is a lot better but caller ID does not work. so i have 2 questions
1) is there any way to increase the call quality .ie a better codec for the X-pro
2) is there a better alternative(other then the sjphone) that will intergrate with the Vonage gateway

I agree that the software provided by Vonage doesn't work well. The call quality is terrible, at least on my Mac.

I had a little better luck with sjphone - I can receive calls, and they sound great, but I can't seem to dial out. Not sure how to fix that - still researching.

Use the SJPhone. Make sure you download the Vonage version for your OS. Vonage seems to work much better than with XPro. (which I tried first) Caller ID works for me on SJPhone.

Use a digital headset or handset with your softphone. Much better than most pc soundcards.

After a week of trying to get the supplied softphone to work, I finally gave up. When calling the VA hospital, I could not get their phone system to understand the tones I sent. I finally bit the bullet and paid $30 to download the eyeBeam phone from CounterPath. I have used it for a day now and out of the gate it has solved all of the problems I had with the Vonage softphone.

It is a shame that Vonge is using a outdated, flawed, unusable piece of crap for a softphone If you ask CounterPath support about it, they will tell you that there is no such phone anymore and they refuse to support it.

Just an FYI

To use SJphone with Vonage, you need to get the Vonage profile.

Go to http://www.sjlabs.com/sjp.html
Download "Service profile for Vonage (MS Windows)"
This will download an EXE file. (if your on a mac, uncompress the file with Stuffit)

Launch SJPhone, and go to preferences, you need to import the vonage.ini file to the profiles. You then need to specify your phone number and password.

The quality is SOOO much better then the crap of X-pro. Every 10 seconds, X-Pro would just emit beeps and hisses. SJPro works fine, the entire time.

As for it being Free: it is, apparently they have a higher quality codec which you only get if you pay.
