What are your opinions about Voip during Rita or any disaster?? I was reading some news reports that Voip provided a excellent means of communications during Katrina.

search the forum and read about katrina. that will give you an idea.
and I have no idea why everyone keeps saying oh Voip this Voip that when it's really 100% dependent on the isp staying up.

If Katrina was any indication, Voip will be up & running. Because of the way Voip works, it doesn't depend on the long distance trunk lines between cities, therefore appears in many cities as a local phone call. Since the long distance trunks are usually overloaded before the storm hits, then trashed during/after a storm hits, getting calls in or out of the area becomes a real problem. With Voip bypassing that bottleneck, from what I've seen Voip can get through when conventional means fail.

Case in point, Katrina. I was able to get through to everywhere in New Orleans with Vonage, even when I was getting "All circuits are busy" or fast busy signals on my cell & land line. There was a brief time (1 hr?) where I couldn't get through in any way, but I'm not sure if that was Vonage's problem or the people I was calling in New Orleans (they had a few other things to worry about besides answering the phone). As the levees broke, there were more & more phone exchanges that failed, assuimng that this happened b/c of the phone co buildings getting flooded out, but I was able to get through to the central business district the whole time.

For outgoing calls, Voip has a clear advantage. As long as you can get an internet connection, all of your phone calls will be routed through Vonage's servers which are in a few different states, which allow you to bypass the damaged local & regional systems. If one was in the storm area, I would suggest dropping the bandwidth on the Voip adapter to the lowest possible setting (done through the website if you're using Vonage). I'd expect internet connections to be a little less than perfect during and after a storm, so the easier you go on the connection, the better off you'll be. After all, when something like this hits, most people would be overjoyed to have access to any working phone line, regardless of how noisy and static-y it is. Even the lowest bandwidth on Vonage was superior quality compared to some of the people I talked to on barrier islands after hurricane Charley on land lines.

We have family stuck on I10 somewhere between Houston and San Antonio and so far our Vonage line has been the only line able to reach them on their cell phones.

The rest of the family spread across four different states from California to the east coast keep getting busy signals dialing into the area.

Good job Vonage.

from the pictures of all those cars stuck in traffic on the highway in texas, that I saw on CNN & Fox channels, of everyone Evacuating the area of where Rita is going...I dont think anyone will be home there to call, so i guess it wont matter whether you can get through or not, cause 99% of the people are not there, except Stephanie Abrams from the weather Channel

A friend of mine said they couldn't get in touch with a friend in Galveston... I had no problems getting through with Vonage. We talked for 45+ mins on 3-way without any problem whatsoever.

Voip works well when you have power, internet access and are remaining above the flood plane. Once any of those factors change, you will not have very good performance.

During the peak of the storm (landfall of the eye), I had a clear connection to Lake Charles, LA... quite surprised actually.
