Hello, my setup is as follows:
RCN Cable-modem >> WRT54G router >> Vonage Router
My destop is connected to the WRT54G router.
I can connect to the internet through the desktop when the phone is not in use. However, when the phone is in use, I cannot browse the internet or do any internet related activity on my desktop. What settings do I need to have in my router to fix this? I have not made any changes to the Qos tab on the WRT54G yet (i.e. Qos is disabled). Please suggest what I can do?
Secondly, I have noticed that for either router, if I try to connect them directly to the cable modem (first time or after rebooting and removing all wires), they do not take the DHCP address given by the cable modem. If I connect my desktop directly to the cable modem, I get a DHCP address and I can access the internet. But for either of the routers (if I have to connect them to the cable modem box after resetting everything), I have to use the Linksys CD and manually go through the process. Why dont they accept the DHCP address given by the cable modem? (note that in this case, I tried to connect the Vonage box directly to the cable modem just for testing)

I would look into adjusting the Application-Port Qos priorities as well as the Port-Based Qos Priorities. It sounds to me as if the port that you have plugged the Vonage router into is a bit of a bandwidth hog. You don't want to lower the Vonage router priority but you can increase the priority for the other ports that are in use. Experiment to see which combination works best. |
