Can anyone share their experiences in calling Japan, people calling you from japan, or using your Vonage equipment in Japan?

International use and calling was the main reason I went with Vonage and as of right now I am feeling duped. The quality is awful when I call Japan but is great when someone from a land line in Japan calls me. I have been on with a couple of tech support folks and I'm waiting on a ticket that I put in last Friday but still no word. I had planned on using Vonage in Japan to call the U.S and vice versa. I would love to hear from anyone who has used this technology to call Japan or who had similar international that were able to be worked out. I am hopeful I can troubleshoot the problem and not have to cancel my service. I would also love to hear from a Vonage rep as to the known or average quality to and from Japan.

I guess since I haven't heard from a Vonage rep on the quality of phone calls to Japan that it must be something they either can't or don't want to answer????

I understand from researching this board that Vonage is at the mercy of the providers but there has to be some degree of known quality.

Here is my calling experience:
-I've made multiple calls to land lines in Japan. All with quality so poor the person on the other end could not hear or understand me but I could hear them great.
- I had someone call me back from a landline and the call was perfect.
- My brother-in-law calls London through Vonage all the time from Atlanta with great quality. He called Japan for me last night and had the same poor quality. Why is there such a tremendous gap in quality? Isn't Japan supposed to have a high tech framework?
-A friend, who is on a cable connection in Atlanta, made a call to Japan for me through Vonage and said the call was clear.
-I made a call to a cell in Japan and the call was fine.

I'm really not sure what to make of this or how to improve my situation. Any suggestions would be appreciated since I still haven't heard back from tech support.

I use Vonage from Japan, and don't have any quality problems when dialing in the states. However, if I call friends in Korea or other countries, the quality is bad enough that we often have to repeat ourselves.

We have the same problem calling indonesia. the person on the other end cannot here us, but we can hear them fine.

See Boodoosy is doing exactly what Vonage would want you to do. I don't mean that in a bad way, like they're scamming, I'm just saying that since you're using Vonage from Japan, the call is on their network and they have total control over the quality.
But when you call from a Vonage device to regular Japanese numbers, do you have any problems? Since then it has to route back to America, then onto traditional carriers, then to the overseas carriers (who Vonage has to pay by the minute which is why they have international rates), then to a termination point in Japan.
Ideally if everyone in the world had Vonage devices we could all call eachother for free, the whole in-network thing that phone/cell/VoIP companies do, and have pretty good quality. But when you have to rely on an international carrier while trying to keep costs down for customers but quality good, it might be tough to find a balance.
So who are you calling in Japan? Business or family or friends or what? Might be worth shipping them a Vonage device if you're calling for umpteen hundreds of minutes per month.

Thanks for the reply. Boodoosy, it's nice to hear you've had a good experience using your equipment in Japan. This information gives me hope!
I am using the technology to keep in touch with a lot of people in the United States while I'm in Japan. So many that it would not make sense for everyone to have Vonage, although several do. My last call to Japan had a much clearer sound and much less delay. This also gives me hope.

Wish me luck! I look forward to hearing more on the call quality that those of you who have called to and from Japan have had.
