You can get an approximate, and base you decision from there.

And I always read Scerruti's posts...

Which is what scerrutti stated as follows:

The intent of the speed test is to give the user some idea of whether their broadband connection will support Voip and how many lines it will support, that is the sole reason the test exists.

Yeah, I probably shouldn't have written that. It was an oversimplification. On Vonage's site, based on their help documents, the speed test is provided to determine if you have a broadband connection. I should not claim to read minds and write opinions about why the test exists here.

So please consider an implicit "In my opinion" on the above statement.

No sweat...That what this forum and this thread is all about: open dialogue!!

Now that we got a good discussion going hopefully there will be more meaningful input to this thread which will be beneficial to all.

As a Software Developer, I think you would find it rather interesting to read VisualWare's (MySpeed) explanation of why their speed tests are better than most of the other speed tests available. It's Greek to me but should make sense to you. Here is a link:

http://www.myspeed.com/support/benchmarks.html

"The results of this benchmark analysis determined that only the MySpeed speed tester provided accurate and consistent Internet bandwidth speed test measurements."

OK, on to other things. I am going to move out of this thread and start a new one to deal with the issues I am experiencing. Your input would be appreciated.

Thanks

I appreciate the effort they have put into their test to attempt to make it accurate, but they admit that their test has limitations as well.

  • However, in most environments, you will find that you are sharing the network, your Internet connection, and the server you are connecting to, with other Internet users. So unless you are the only person using the network and the server, you can and should expect a little variation in the results.
  • By default, MySpeed will use your web server as the only server side software to perform HTTP download and upload speed tests. This works very well up to around 100 Mbps for downloads and 10 Mbps for uploads.

I think that they are accurate with regard to speed testing for web surfing. However their test methodology is tightly linked to the web server and the http protocol. The test is also designed to determine maximum throughput. These two factors do not make it a good Voip test. A Voip test would look at dropped packets and jitter while doing a appropriately sized simultaneous bi-directional UDP transfers.

I think Vonage would be better served by a simple traffic light that displayed red, yellow and green status based on the lesser of the upload and download speeds. Red < 60 kbps <= Yellow < 90 kbps <= Green.

I think this site would benefit from a full featured Voip test that combined aspects of the testyourvoip test with ping plotter so that if the test determined a problem it would also identify where the problem was occuring.

The test should also monitor CPU usage and total network usage on both endpoints to flag those as possible sources of delays.
