Each and every morning, the Rt31p2 acts as if it's resetting. The power light flashed rapidly, each of the 3 ports going through a detection phase, the phones go off, then connectivity returns. 1.46AM. Sometimes, the router will not come back to being operational, but lock up with all lights lit but no internet or phone being available.

What would cause this and how can I fix it?

I had that problem, though mine was intermittant. My guess is that maybe at 1:46 am, your RTP31P2 is trying to renew its IP address from your ISP but something is causing it to reset in the process.

My solution was to get my RTP31P2 exchanged for an RTP300. It's only ever reset on its own if there was a firmware update.

I had that problem too, the only way to get it taken care of is replacing it, though there are RTP31P2s that don't have that problem, the RTP300 will be better Smile

I'd do an RTP300 myself if I could afford the $99 they hold hostage for the week or two that it takes to get the box back to them and such, but I can't right now. Maybe next month Smile

Eek. I forgot about the holding fee. It used to be intermittant, but now it's every night. At 1.46. Such a weird time.

You mention that, "phones go off." Does your phone ring or just lose connectivity? I am curious because this might be the source of the problem I am having.

Actually, if you ask them to waive the fee for 2 weeks they will...This is my 4th device, and I NEVER had them charge me.

Well, when the router resets, it's just like it had a new poweron. All the lights come on, then they go through a checking phase where the ports are scanned looking for PCs, and the phones are looking for connections. Then it all comes back online.

It doesn't always complete a full reset though. Sometimes, it'll hang, and sit there with all the lights on, but nothing happens. Net doesn't work, phone doesn't work. I can't even access the admin page on the router.

Just a thought... I only had the RT31P2 routers for 2 weeks (terrible audio/analog circuitry in them) but they both ran VERY warm (if not hot). While it resetting at the EXACT same time might not be related to this unless you happen to send a bunch of traffic out beforehand, it might be worth taking a look at the physical router itself. I know my RT31P2 locked up when I had a paper sitting on top of it (oops) and it locked up until I power cycled it.

That said, the RTP300 runs MUCH cooler...and I've never seen it reboot other than for a firmware update. Also, the audio section of it is very good, as long as you don't have Panasonic phones... still sounds like there's an interaction with those for now, which will be fixed in the next firmware release.

It's 1.44am now. I'm keeping my eye on this thing.

Yeah, It was running hot when i had it below the desk. I think it wa freezing/crashing randomly a while back...but I factory defaulted it and the symptoms went away. But since I've moved it to above the desk, It seems cooler now.

Edit: 2.00am. The router just reset. This time, it came back up. But I noticed that the Firmware changed from 1.30.00 to 1.30.01.

How could I track what is going on? The modem log shows nothing occuring after noon earlier today. So, I don't think it's something going on with the modem. The router is doing something at 1.45am every morning but i don't know how i could find out what it's doing. Any idea?

Okay I've narrowed a few things down.

It's not just a reset anymore. It's hard crashing. Sometimes the router will reset itself. OTher times, the router will just crash. just die completely and freeze.

First, nothing is happening from the router's side during a crash/reset. I've installed the linksys logviewer software to see what the router is doing when. During a bootup, it contacts Vonage and Adelphia servers to find IPs and logins etc. It routinely pings Vonage throughout operation, every few minutes.

Then.... it stops. Everything just stops. There are no incoming or outgoing packets from any machine on the network. The internet light on the RT31p2 is flashing as if there's activity, but all other lights (power, pc1/2/3, phone1) are lit as if they're working. But the router is doing NOTHING. I cannot access the admin page (192.168.15.1) either. The router just CRASHES hard. And it's done nothing out of the ordinary (contact Vonage) before it dies.

The log from the modem says pretty much the same thing.

These are all the reboots needed on the router. The modem detects the ethernet connection is gone.

The router runs hot, but nothing extraordinary, at least, not by touch. Could it possibly be overheating? i've had it on a wood surface, to the carpet, and it seems to not be happy anywhere. I've had it vertical and horizontal. I hope it IS overheating, but have these units been known to overheat at all?

I've done soft and hard resets. I've unplugged all but one PC from the router. I've done everything I can think of but replace the router.

Any thoughts?
