When someone calls and I am not home or choose not to pick up the phone, the caller gets a message that he cannot leave messages at this number. However, if I am talking to someone else and another person calls, they are allowed to leave a message. Have any of you had this problem? Very weird. I am now on hold with customer service, but I thought I'd post this in case CS is not helpful.

There is an answer machine in my wireless phone. We usually turn it off and use the Vonage system. However, we recently had a brief power outage and it turned itself on when the power came back. It seems the Vonage voicemail will not work when another answer machine is active. I turned it off and the problem was resolved.

Strictly speaking, it's not a matter of the Vonage voicemail not working. You simply had- inadvertently- the timing set so that your home answering machine picked up before the Vonage system kicked in. As far as Vonage was concerned, it was a completed call with no need for voicemail. You could reverse the situation by setting Vonage to answer faster and the home machine to answer slower.

...you are right. The Vonage voicemail was working fine. It was the interference of the other message system that screwed things up.

On a related issue, I was recently told by a tech that if the internet connection goes down, my Vonage voicemail will not work. That is disappointing and seems counterintuitive to me. Is this correct?

It will roll to whatever number you have as the NAN. I have my cell in there so any calls are picked up by that VM...
I can try to simulate it and see.

I agree that it will forward to the NAN. I have tested it myself by setting the NAN, then unplugging the Vonage device. I was just surprised to hear that a live connection to my Vonage device was required in order for someone to reach my Vonage voicemail. I assumed if the Vonage network lost connection with my device, calls would go to the Vonage voicemail. I can't believe the voicemail is stored in memory on the Vonage device? That would seem like an archaic way to do things...

Have you tried leaving the NAN blank and then calling from the cellphone with the router disconnected?

UPDATE-I just cleared the NAN, waited a few mins, then unplugged the router. The call went to my Vonage Voicemail, so it does work.

Grrr... very frustrating getting the wrong information. The CSR told me that if I lost connection with the Vonage network, the voicemail would not work. Maybe he was confused by "my internet connection going down," versus, "the Vonage network going down."

Anyhow, thanks for your time Trowski. That makes sence. That is the way I expected it would work...
