Looking to hear from other Vonage users, particularly those who do not have, or don't use, QOS. My experience after 10 hrs of calling without QOS has been problem free. My setup (in connection order):

ISP = Time Warner Cable (4.5Meg down / 384K up)
Cable Modem = Motorola SURFboard 4100
Router = Netgear WGR614 v6 with Vonage recommened UDP ports forwarded (uses Broadcom chipset but no 3rd party Firmware and no QOS)
ATA = PAP2

I've read all about the Linksys routers and the availability of Sveasoft firmware with lots of QOS control and have been considering getting a WRT54G to take advantage of its capabilities. The reason for this post and question is that I've found my non-QOS setup to work just great even when my son is on X-Box Live hosting games. I only have 10hrs of experience so far, but I've not had any problems or poor voice quality in either direction (I've been asking the connected party (without telling them I'm calling through Vonage) how the call quality was after we finish speaking and so far no one could tell that I wasn't on my regular land line. I don't use BitTorrent, and don't regularly upload large files, so that doesn't factor into our usage profile.

I understand that there are enough variables in the overall Voip environment that "Your Mileage May Vary", but I would like to know if others have successfully used a non-QOS setup long term without problems.

I have a setup very similar to yours with a Netgear router as the first device inside my cable modem using RoadRunner. I have always kept my Vonage device inside my internal network, have never used the QoS, and have had no problems that were Vonage related for the year or so I have been using Vonage. Twice in that time frame I've had QoS problems that were noticeable with choppy audio on the phone, but both were solved by RoadRunner, once with a replacement of the cable modem and the other with the replacement of a corroded part in the cable box in the yard. As long as you have good upload speed you should be fine.

If your current environment works for you, then why change anything?

I basically use QoS functionality as insurance. I have two internet connections and don't download/upload large files on a regular basis, so I'm pretty low risk to begin with. I do hit bittorrent occasionally when our TiVo misses a show we want to see though.

If you do have bandwidth problems and post here, the WRT54G/Sveasoft nags (like me Smile ) will be sure to chime in. I'm just amazed at the functionality their firmware has crammed into a $60 piece of hardware.

My TWC service has been very good - and it's a new neighborhood so the local infrastructure is in great shape. On the one hand I like the idea of tinkering with a linux based router (Linksys WRT54G or the like) and playing with QOS to make a more or less "bullet-proof" Voip Lan, but I also have a nice home network with clean Cat5 homeruns to every outlet for phone and ethernet, and a new Netgear wireless G router that was incredibly cheap, but works great, including with the PAP2 behind it. I'll probably keep it like it is for now and see if I discover any problems as we go. My call quality has been great - really no difference that I can hear between land line and Vonage.

I'm in a similar position as you. Only used Vonage for about a 1.5 months now, but have had no issues. Did a test with a friend... while talking, uploaded large files on two computers. Friend heard some minor drops in voice quality - I heard no change in quality. Makes sense. But as soon as file uploads completed, it went back to crystal clear voice quality.

I'll probably add some sort of QoS at some point in time, but probably not until I start to have issues. Why change what's working? Smile

It depends on your connection and internet usage. The higher your internet connection's upload speed and the less bandwidth intensive your usage is, the less chance that you'll have a problem with call quality. Really, the only time QoS is necessary is if you're moving large amounts of data or have multiple users on a single connection that's a bit undersized for that many users.

As you've noticed, most of these residential internet connections are lacking bandwidth on the upstream, but for most users, it's not a major problem. I think it's safe to say that we see far more problems in the forum where the ISP is the problem, not the lack of QoS on the user's end.

I have my RT31P2 behind another Linksys router, and that router shares the internet connection with my brother who's in another apartment, he plays his PS2 and runs his wireless laptop and sometimes a desktop or another PS2, I have my desktop behind my RT31P2, I have no QOS available with this setup, but only once did I ever have a problem, and it might not have even been the usage, but once in 9 months is pretty good..

That's because game systems communicate using small packets of real-time data, just like Vonage does. QoS only matters much when you're dealing with bulk data transfers (file uploads) that try to consume all the available bandwidth.
